Steam, the popular gaming platform, is known for its user reviews that help gamers make informed decisions about purchasing games. However, a recent scandal has emerged involving the game Shinobi Warfare, which has garnered an 'overwhelmingly positive' rating through questionable means.
As spotted by DualShockers, a Reddit user named Glavurdan brought the issue to light by posting screenshots from the Steam store page of Shinobi Warfare, revealing that players were being offered free in-game items in exchange for positive reviews. This practice not only undermines the integrity of user reviews but also goes against Steam's Terms of Service.
According to Glavurdan, players were promised 1000 free gems for leaving a positive review on Steam and providing their in-game username. This unethical scheme has resulted in a flood of positive reviews for Shinobi Warfare, artificially inflating its overall rating.
Despite the controversy, the developers of Shinobi Warfare continue to encourage players to leave positive reviews by offering incentives. Recent reviews of the game often mention nostalgia and childhood, indicating that there may be a prompt instructing players on what to write.
Steam has taken notice of the suspicious activity surrounding Shinobi Warfare's reviews and has flagged them as potentially unrelated to the game's actual quality. The platform's Terms of Service clearly state that artificially influencing review scores is prohibited, including coercing players to leave reviews in exchange for benefits.
