Character customisation has been one of the most-requested features in Phasmophobia for years, and Kinetic Games has finally confirmed it's coming. The Player Character Update launches across all platforms on May 5th, 2026.

The centrepiece is a new in-lobby Customisation shop offering 12 playable characters with options to change clothing, hair colour, and more. Kinetic is also tying cosmetics to Twitch Drops from launch, starting with a High Priestess T-shirt available through Phasmophobia creators between May 5th and May 11th. More items are planned for future updates. Beyond cosmetics, the update brings new character animations and removes the death room entirely, which is a bigger deal than it sounds since it changes how an investigation actually feels when things go wrong. Interaction with equipment and the environment is also getting reworked.

I'm pleased to see this one ship. Phasmophobia has been in Early Access long enough that a proper character system feels overdue, and the scope here suggests Kinetic is serious about pushing toward the 1.0 release they've teased for later this year. Full patch notes below.

Welcome back, Ghost Hunters. We have some much-anticipated news for you.

Today we’re excited to announce that Phasmophobia’s Player Character Update will be launching across all platforms on May 5th, 2026. Stay tuned to our social channels and official Discord server for exact release timings.

While we won’t go into too many details before the release, we did want to lift the curtain ever so slightly on some of what you can expect to see in the update. A full rundown of changes, additions and more will be available when the update is released.

Of course, at the heart of this update is the ability to customise your player character in-game. After a long wait, the Customisation shop in the lobby is finally open for business. Here you’ll be able to choose from one of 12 characters and be able to change their clothing, hair colour and much more. While the shop is full of options at launch, you can look forward to more items being added in future updates and Twitch Drops - such as the below High Priestess T-shirt drop that'll be starting with the launch of the update.

This Twitch Drop will be available for all Phasmophobia creators to distribute to their communities from May 5th until May 11th.

To earn Twitch Drops, make sure you've connected your Twitch account to Phasmophobia.

Customisation plays a huge role in this update, but it’s not the only change. With the Player Character Update, we’ll be introducing new character animations as well as some changes to the overall gameplay experience such as the removal of the death room and the way you interact with both the environment and your chosen equipment during an investigation.

Check out a few screenshots below to get a taste of what’s to come on May 5th.

There is plenty to explore and experience once the update launches and we can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the changes to the game. Of course, this is a huge update to the game we’ve all known and loved for many years so we’ll be looking out for feedback after release so that we can continue to iterate and improve Phasmophobia as we head towards 1.0 later this year.
