Paradox has confirmed May 6th as the release date for Europa Universalis V's first major expansion, Fate of the Phoenix, and the free 1.2 "Echinades" Update that ships alongside it. The official announcement dropped today, and if you've been waiting for a reason to dive into EU5, this looks like it.

Fate of the Phoenix centres on the Byzantine Empire, letting players wrestle with its bureaucratic systems, survive the titular disaster chain, and rewrite history by keeping Rome alive. On the free side, the 1.2 Echinades Update is doing serious heavy lifting: economy, military, diplomacy, and AI have all been reworked, there's new content for Orthodoxy and the Balkans, and Paradox is claiming over 2,000 fixes. Over 2,000 is a number that either means the base game had real rough edges, or the team has been thorough to an impressive degree. Probably both.

Here's everything that changed.
