Escape the Backrooms' latest patch is cleaning up the mess that's been haunting cross-platform multiplayer since the May 28th console launch. Patch 1.3.2 addresses the crashes and voice comms failures that have made co-op sessions unreliable, especially when players from different platforms team up.

The big wins here are the voice chat fixes, you won't lose audio mid-session anymore, and the microphone echo from push-to-talk is gone. Matchmaking got some attention too: the ping display is temporarily removed because it was showing inaccurate numbers and confusing players, and joining via room code now works without the delay that was killing the experience. There's also a critical fix for Level 9 Part 2 where the Wretch wouldn't spawn for hosts, which was completely blocking progression.

The studio is still investigating FPS-related sensitivity issues, so if you're dealing with that, they know about it. Check the full notes below for the complete list of what's changed.

Buff Nerf Fix

Hey Wanderers!

Today we are releasing a new bugfix patch, ironing out some more mischief the entities have caused since the update on May 28th, which included the console launch and cross-platform matchmaking.

Thank you so much for all of your reports and the amount of information provided – it has been pivotal for us to help get these fixed! If you experience any further bugs, or want to provide feedback and suggestions, please make a ticket on our Feature Upvote page. We are still investigating some commonly reported issues, such as FPS causing some sensitivity issues.

Please see the patch notes below.

Patch Notes:

Crashes:

  • Fixed an issue that caused a crash to occur after idling for an extended period of time in the HUB.
  • Resolved an issue that caused a crash when selecting “Cancel” whilst joining a multiplayer session that the host left.

Matchmaking:

  • Temporarily removed the shown “ping” from the lobby list.
  • Dev Note: The ping shown was inaccurate and causing confusion. We have temporarily removed this while we investigate the cause and will reintroduce when we’ve fixed the issue.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the same platform player icons to appear as the cross-platform icon in the lobby.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented an immediate transition into a multiplayer session when joining using the “Enter with Room Code” screen.
  • Resolved an issue that could cause the game to hang temporarily when in a loading screen.
  • Fixed an issue that would occur after being invited to a lobby with all slots occupied, preventing the player from being able to join any other lobby.

Voice Chat:

  • Fixed an issue that caused a microphone echo when using the push to talk option.
  • Fixed an issue that caused a player to lose the ability to communicate over voice comms after initially loading into the game.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented the output of audio in any area when connecting a headset while the game is running.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented voice chat from functioning for one of the users during active gameplay in a multiplayer session with three players.
  • Fixed an issue that would cause the last player that is eliminated in a session to lose audio after being transitioned back to the lobby.

Level Specific:

  • Fixed an issue that caused the host to be unable to see Wretch in Part 2 of Level 9 after level restart, blocking progression.
  • Fixed an issue that allowed player to grab key card from the Wretch's Cage in the MEG Basement when using a controller.
  • Improved performance issues caused by Water VFX in Abandoned Base.

Additional Changes:

  • Resolved missing translation for critical sanity loss moments in Polish.

Escape the Backrooms is now available on Xbox Series X|S, including PC and Xbox Game Pass, and PlayStation 5. We’d love to hear all about your first escape teaming up with console buddies over on our Discord and TikTok accounts.
