Cities: Skylines II Update for Loading Bug Patch Notes (4th May 2026)

Colossal Order is tackling Cities: Skylines II's mod-related loading times with a new Steam beta branch, and they want players to help test it.

Long loading times with mods have been a persistent frustration for Cities: Skylines II players, and Colossal Order is now asking for help testing a fix before it goes wide. Rather than pushing the hotfix straight to the main build, the studio has opened a dedicated Steam beta branch under the 'loading_fix' option, which is a sensible approach when you're dealing with a bug that likely behaves differently across hundreds of mod combinations.

To try it, you'll need to own the game on Steam and manually switch your game version through Steam's beta settings menu. Once you've tested it, the developers are directing feedback to their official forum rather than the usual scatter of social media comments, which at least keeps the data useful.

I'll be honest, mod-related loading issues are the sort of thing that quietly kills a city builder's long-term playerbase, so getting this sorted properly matters. The full update notes are below.

Full Patch Notes

Hello mayors!

We have worked on a fix for the long loading times if you play with mods, and we would love your help to get more data points. We have opened up a Steam-only Beta branch where you can test out the hotfix that we are working on.

To opt in, you need to own the game on Steam, and follow the instructions on how to change your game version here and choose the 'loading_fix' beta option. This will start updating the game and will enable it. If you want to disable it afterward, swap back to the Default Public Version in the same menu.

If you have any more feedback after you have tested the branch, we would ask that you share it on our forum!
