Microsoft has confirmed it’s been hacked by what it says is a state-sponsored Russian group known as Midnight Blizzard. Not only that, the group has managed to infiltrate various internal systems and company source code.

“In recent weeks, evidence has emerged that Midnight Blizzard is using information initially taken from our corporate email systems to gain unauthorised access,” Microsoft stated. “This has included access to some of the company’s source code repositories and internal systems.”

When it comes to any “Microsoft-hosted customer-facing systems”, Microsoft has not discovered any evidence of the hackers accessing that information. However, the group did manage to obtain some customer details through the emails they accessed.

“It seems that Midnight Blizzard is trying to utilise various secrets it has uncovered,” the company revealed. “Some of these secrets were exchanged between customers and Microsoft via email, and as we come across them in our stolen emails, we have been and continue to reach out to these customers to help them take precautionary measures.”

The breach at Microsoft was first announced back in January. Since then, Microsoft has stated it has, and will continue to, enhance its “security investments” to ensure information remains protected. Microsoft also mentioned that the investigation into the Russian hackers is ongoing, and more details will be shared as they are uncovered.

“Our ongoing investigations of Midnight Blizzard activities are still in progress, and the results of our investigations will keep evolving,” they noted. “We are dedicated to sharing our findings.”
