Xbox One Can Now Run Series X Games, If You Watch Ads

Microsoft's ad-supported cloud streaming test is live for Xbox Insiders, and the most interesting angle isn't the ads themselves. It's that Xbox One owners can now stream Series X games without buying new hardware.

"This is designed to help give more people more affordable ways to play on devices they already own." That line, buried in Microsoft's announcement about its new ad-supported streaming test, is doing a lot of quiet work. Because what it actually means is this: if you still have an Xbox One sitting under your TV, you can now stream Xbox Series X games on it. No new console required. You just have to sit through some ads first.

The test went live on July 23 for members of the Xbox Insider Program. Here's how it works: Insiders can stream select games they own from their library in one-hour sessions, with pre-roll ads playing before each session begins. No mid-game interruptions, no ads layered into gameplay. Xbox's Chief Strategic Officer Matthew Ball laid out the ground rules on Twitter: ads won't break the flow of play, they'll meet the same quality bar as Xbox's own content, and they'll be clearly labelled as advertising.

Not every game is available. Microsoft has confirmed that supported titles include 2026 releases like Forza Horizon 6 and 007 First Light alongside older catalogue games. Players still need to own the games they want to stream; this isn't a free Game Pass substitute. As Gaming Bolt reported, the ad-supported tier is expected to remain entirely separate from Game Pass.

Old Hardware, New Games

The Series X backwards compatibility angle is the part of this announcement I find most interesting, and the part Microsoft seems to be deliberately underplaying. Press Start noted that Xbox One owners will be able to play Series X games through this service without purchasing new hardware. If you're someone who skipped the current generation entirely, whether because of the price or because you just didn't see enough reason to upgrade, this is a genuine on-ramp. Two minutes of ads for an hour of a game your console physically cannot run is a trade most people would take.

This has been a long time coming. Reports about Xbox exploring ad-supported cloud gaming surfaced as far back as 2022, when the company was reportedly considering in-game ads for free-to-play titles on its streaming platform. Former Xbox CFO Tim Stuart later suggested the model could target regions where console ownership is low, naming Africa, India, and Southeast Asia as potential markets. Microsoft confirmed internal testing of a free ad-supported cloud tier in October 2025, shortly after raising Game Pass prices. Reports at the time indicated players would get five one-hour sessions per month, with pre-roll ads running around two minutes each.

Xbox first enabled cloud streaming for owned games back in November 2024, opening up the service beyond the Game Pass catalogue. Since then, the company has steadily expanded the number of Series X/S and PC titles playable through the cloud. This ad-supported test is the next logical step: removing the subscription barrier entirely for people willing to watch a short ad.

I wrote earlier this week about the ad-supported tier from the subscription angle, but the hardware story here deserves its own spotlight. Microsoft is sitting on a massive installed base of Xbox One consoles that can't run current-gen software. Giving those players a path to Series X games, even a limited one, is a smarter play than just hoping they'll all spend $500 on new hardware. Whether the final version keeps the one-hour session cap or loosens it will determine if this stays a curiosity or becomes something millions of people actually use. Xbox Insiders can submit feedback through the Player Voice platform now, and the program's subreddit is already collecting early impressions.
