Game Pass Drops 11 Games in August, Led by Gears E-Day Beta

Microsoft just stacked August's first Game Pass wave with 11 titles, and on paper it looks like one of the stronger drops in recent months. But the real draw here isn't the volume; it's a single four-day window where subscribers get early access to the Gears of War: E-Day multiplayer beta before the game's October 6 launch.

According to Xbox Wire, the E-Day beta runs from August 6 to 10 for Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers, as well as anyone who pre-ordered. It kicks off at 3 p.m. EDT on August 6. There's a wrinkle, though: this early access period is limited to Horde Siege, the revamped PvE wave survival mode. Versus multiplayer won't be available until the open beta the following weekend, August 13 to 17, which is free for everyone. Locking the paid early access to a single mode while the free weekend gets both has understandably frustrated some players who expected the full package for showing up first.

I get the logic from The Coalition's side. Horde Siege is clearly the mode they want to stress-test at scale, and splitting the beta weekends gives them cleaner data. But if you're someone who pre-ordered specifically to play competitive Versus early, being told to wait another week while free players eventually get everything you paid to access early is a strange sell. The beta preload is already live at around 62GB on Series X, split between Horde Siege and Versus downloads.

Beyond the Beta

The rest of the August lineup is a mix of day-one launches and catalog additions. Beast of Reincarnation, a new action RPG from Game Freak, hit the service today alongside Heretic + Hexen. PowerWash Simulator 2 and Monsters are Coming! arrive August 6. Grounded 2 enters Game Preview on August 11, which is a notable one given how much goodwill the original built during its own early access run. Cricket 26, Date Everything!, Mio: Memories in Orbit, Sandustry, Bounty Star, Ball x Pit, and Egging On round out the wave across the next two weeks.

Sandustry stands out as a day-one Game Preview launch on PC, a factory-building game with fully destructible voxel worlds. It's the sort of thing that could quietly become a time sink if the sandbox clicks. Mio: Memories in Orbit is a hand-crafted Metroidvania that looks like it could appeal to the Hollow Knight crowd, and Date Everything! lets you romance a smoke alarm, which I respect on principle.

Four games leave the service on August 15: Menace, Atlas Fallen, Aliens: Fireteam Elite, and Firewatch. Losing Firewatch stings a little; it's one of those games I'd always point new subscribers toward. If you haven't played it, now's the time.

This wave also arrives after Microsoft's April price cuts to Game Pass, which dropped Ultimate to $22.99 per month and PC Game Pass to $13.99. At those prices, a month that includes a high-profile beta, a Game Freak RPG, and Grounded 2's early access is a solid return. The Gears E-Day beta alone will drive most of the conversation, and if Horde Siege plays as well as the E-Day Direct footage suggested, October 6 can't come fast enough.
