Warhammer Skulls Drops a Full Game on May 21

Most showcases tease trailers and drop vague release windows. This year's Warhammer Skulls is shipping an entire game alongside its reveals.

Most gaming showcases hand you trailers and release windows. This year's Warhammer Skulls is handing you a full game. Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II launches on May 21, the same day as the annual Warhammer Skulls showcase, as confirmed by publisher Kasedo Games and developer Bulwark Studios alongside a new leader deep-dive video. It's coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store at $39.99.

That pricing alone makes me sit up. In a year where every major release seems to be creeping toward $70, a full sequel at $40 with two playable factions and two narrative campaigns feels like a deliberate counter-punch. There's also an Omnissiah edition with a digital artbook, original soundtrack, and the legacy soundtrack from the first game, though no price was listed for that version.

The release date reveal came via the second entry in an ongoing video series spotlighting deployable leaders. This one covers Lector-Dogmatis Videx, a cyborg priest for the Adeptus Mechanicus who can either buff allies from the backline through rituals or be skilled into a ranged artillery platform using his magnarail lance, and Obasis, a Necron Lord called The Shield who does exactly what you'd expect. Obasis is a melee wall; pair him with his Lychguards and they form a grinding defensive line that generates dominion while soaking damage. You can also spec him into an area-of-effect tank with a relic called the Tesla Weave. Both leaders offer different tactical identities, which is exactly what the first Mechanicus sometimes lacked in its roster variety.

Mechanicus II builds on its 2018 predecessor with a revamped Cognition system where every unit has its own method of collecting the Cognition points needed to activate abilities. New environmental mechanics also split faction identity further: the Adeptus Mechanicus can use terrain for cover, while the Necrons can destroy it outright. And for the old-school Warhammer crowd, the Leagues of Votann, 40K's space dwarfs, are making their video game debut here.

A Stacked Skulls Lineup

Mechanicus II isn't the only reason to pay attention on May 21. The Warhammer Skulls showcase itself is loaded. Space Marine 2, Darktide, Dawn of War 4, Total War: Warhammer 3, Rogue Trader, Dark Heresy, Boltgun 2, Battlesector, and Warhammer Survivors are all confirmed to make appearances. Alanah Pearce is hosting, and she's also voicing Nyra Veyrath, the playable Celestian of the Sisters of Battle in Boltgun 2. The broadcast goes live on YouTube and Twitch at 9am PT / 12pm ET / 5pm BST.

I'll be honest: I wrote about Mechanicus II just yesterday when it locked down its spring window, and I didn't expect the actual date to land this fast. Dropping a full release during a showcase rather than just announcing one is a power move, and it instantly makes Skulls feel weightier than the usual parade of sizzle reels. Kasedo clearly wants Mechanicus II to ride the wave of attention the showcase generates rather than compete for it weeks later.

One caveat for Steam Deck players: community members who tried the demo reported some performance issues on the handheld, so it's unclear whether those have been resolved for the full release. If you're planning to play on Deck, it might be worth waiting for early reports before jumping in.

For anyone hungry for Total War: Warhammer 40,000 news specifically, Creative Assembly recently said to expect more on that front by the end of June, so Skulls probably won't be the venue for it. Everything else on that lineup, though, is fair game, and having a full Mechanicus II launch anchoring the event gives the whole thing a different energy than previous years.
