Messhof, the studio behind competitive fencing classic Nidhogg, is launching its bullet heaven platformer Blood Dungeon on August 25 across all major platforms.

A studio best known for one of the tightest competitive multiplayer games ever made is about to ship a solo survival roguelike. That sentence alone should tell you how far Messhof has drifted from the fencing duels of Nidhogg, and I mean that as a compliment.

Blood Dungeon, listed on Steam and first shown during Day of the Devs 2026, now has a firm release date: August 25, 2026. It launches simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, Switch, and PC. The Switch 2 and Switch versions were confirmed today by Messhof, rounding out a full cross-platform day-one release.

The pitch is a mashup that sounds wild on paper. Blood Dungeon takes the auto-attacking "bullet heaven" loop that Vampire Survivors popularised and drops it into a 2D platformer. You're not standing in a field watching numbers fly off skeletons. You're parkouring across grates, scrambling up ladders, and climbing chains while hordes of over 100 enemy types swarm from every direction. Bats, centaurs, exploding eyeballs. Some phase through walls. The movement is the survival mechanic, not just a way to reposition between cooldowns.

Messhof describes it as "a return to their roots of frenetic, fun, movement-focused gameplay," and that tracks. Nidhogg was all about reading your opponent's spacing and committing to a lunge. Blood Dungeon swaps the opponent for a screen full of monsters, but the emphasis on precise, aggressive movement carries over. I'm curious whether that Nidhogg DNA actually translates into a single-player survival loop or whether it just sounds good in a press release. The platforming focus could be what separates this from the dozens of Vampire Survivors-likes that have flooded Steam over the past few years.

Nine characters, six arenas

Content-wise, Messhof is packing in a decent spread for launch. Nine unlockable playable characters each come with their own weapon and movement perks. One character, Leggy, spins climbable webs. Another, Bug, can fly. A third called Skinja is built around raw speed. Six survival arenas, over 100 quests, and over 100 unlockable weapons and upgrades fill out the progression. There are also online leaderboards and daily dungeons, which should give the game some staying power if the core loop clicks.

Permanent upgrades come through a system Messhof calls the "Bone Shop," where you spend bones earned from completed runs. There's also a character called the Dogmancer who handles a "bone toll" for unlocking permanent upgrades. Between the blood harvesting, the bone economy, and the pixel art gore, the aesthetic leans hard into gritty dungeon horror. The soundtrack, described as "dungeon dnb" by composer Thomas Hooey, sounds like it could either be brilliant or completely unhinged. Possibly both.

What catches my eye is that this is entirely self-published. No mid-size publisher logo, no Devolver or Annapurna branding. Messhof is putting this out on their own across five platforms at once. For a small studio whose last major release was Nidhogg II back in 2017, that's a serious logistical bet. Shipping on Switch and Switch 2 simultaneously adds another layer of complexity, though it also means they're not leaving any audience behind.

The bullet heaven genre has gotten crowded fast. Vampire Survivors proved there was a massive appetite for the format, and since then we've seen everything from Brotato to Soulstone Survivors carve out their own niches. Most of them, though, are top-down. Bolting that auto-attack loop onto a platformer with real verticality is a genuine twist, and I think it could work if the movement feels as sharp as Nidhogg's did. If it doesn't, the whole thing falls apart, because you can't coast on spectacle in a genre where the moment-to-moment feel is everything.

Blood Dungeon launches August 25, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, Switch, and PC via Steam. No price has been announced yet.
