Early Friday morning, someone threw a Molotov cocktail at the San Francisco home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The device damaged an exterior gate, and no one was injured. It is, by any measure, an alarming escalation in the real-world hostility that has been building around the AI industry.

According to CNBC's reporting, the attack was deliberate and targeted. The San Francisco Police Department confirmed the incident in a statement, describing the thrown object as an "incendiary device." The SFPD's Special Investigations and Arson Units are leading the investigation, and the FBI said it is aware of the incident and is working with San Francisco police.

The arrest came fast. Less than an hour after the attack on Altman's home, police say a 20-year-old man matching the description of the suspect was picked up near OpenAI's headquarters, where he had allegedly been threatening to burn the building down. OpenAI's office remained open following the incident, with security instructing employees not to allow anyone to tailgate them into the building.

This is not a gaming story in the traditional sense, but OpenAI sits at the centre of one of the most contentious debates in the games industry right now. AI-generated art, AI-written dialogue, AI-assisted development, the conversation is everywhere, and it is not a calm one. Whether the suspect's motivations connect to any of that is not yet known, and it would be irresponsible to assume. What is clear is that the anger directed at AI companies and their leadership has moved well beyond social media arguments. A Molotov cocktail is not a tweet.
