CD Projekt Red has given The Witcher 4 its first public release window. In an official pre-Gamescom video message on 24 August, joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski said the game is "targeting a 2028 release window" and that the studio is "not ready to share an exact date".

That is a target, not a confirmed launch. Some coverage compressed the remark into "launches in 2028" or a confirmed release date, but the wording is narrower. Nowakowski named a year the studio is aiming for, with no month, quarter or fixed day attached to it. A transcript of the message published by Gematsu carries the full remarks, and PC Gamer reported the same targeting window.

The Witcher 4 will not appear at Gamescom 2026. Nowakowski confirmed the studio is "not showing The Witcher IV at the event". What CD Projekt Red is bringing to Cologne is its The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt expansion, Songs of the Past, which it has dated to 2027. That expansion is the nearer Witcher release, and it sits between now and whatever 2028 brings for the sequel.

Nowakowski also described the sequel as the work of "more than 500 incredibly talented developers". That squares with the staffing figures the studio disclosed earlier this year. On its most recent earnings call CD Projekt Red put The Witcher 4 at 513 developers, up from 499 in February, a breakdown we covered alongside the Songs of the Past team size. The two figures come from separate disclosures, a video message and an earnings slide, so they should not be read as one and the same, but both point at The Witcher 4 as the studio's main project.

Plenty is still open. CD Projekt Red has not named platforms or console generations for The Witcher 4 through official channels, and the specific hardware lists circulating in some reports do not trace back to the studio. There is no exact date, no pricing and no confirmed Gamescom appearance for the sequel. Anything beyond a 2028 target stays the studio's stated aim rather than a fixed commitment.

The only firm dates on the table are a 2027 window for Songs of the Past and a 2028 target for the sequel, with the exact release still unannounced.
