Physint Moves to Xbox as PlayStation Steps Away
Xbox is Kojima Productions' new partner on Physint. PlayStation Studios says it has stepped away, Kojima says he was told in mid-June the project would be cancelled, and development is continuing.

Physint has a new partner. Kojima Productions confirmed on 10 September that Xbox is taking the game on, and PlayStation Studios said the same day that it has stepped away from the project.
Development is continuing. Nothing else about the game moved with it: no platforms, no release window and no price have been announced by anyone involved.
The four statements kept separate
Four organisations and people spoke on 10 September, and they do not all say the same thing. Read together they blur. Read apart they are more useful.
Kojima Productions published an English statement headlined "XBOX Confirmed as New Partner for PHYSINT", dated 10 September 2026 BST:
Today, we are excited to confirm that our journey with PHYSINT continues with Asha and the team at XBOX. XBOX understands and shares our bold creative vision, and this expands our relationship with XBOX beyond OD. As we move forward with the development of PHYSINT, we remain committed to redefining the action-espionage genre for players around the world.
Worth noting what that statement does not contain. Kojima Productions calls Xbox a partner. The word publish is absent from its own announcement.
Xbox supplies that word. Its post, headlined "XBOX and KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS Expand Partnership to Publish PHYSINT", quotes Xbox CEO Asha Sharma:
Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life. We're honored that Kojima-san has chosen XBOX to work with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at XBOX.
The same Xbox page takes the arrangement past games entirely, saying the relationship "will also extend beyond games, with XBOX and KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS collaborating across film and television to bring new stories to broader audiences". No titles, formats or partners are attached to that line.
PlayStation Studios posted on X:
An update from PlayStation Studios: After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on its project PHYSINT. We continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima's vision for the game. Our relationship remains strong after three decades of industry-leading, genre-defining creative cooperation, and we look forward to continued close collaboration with Hideo Kojima and his award-winning independent studio in the future.
Hideo Kojima gave the longest account, also on X:
As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project. PHYSINT is an important project both to me personally and to KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner. In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in XBOX a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again. Please rest assured that development of PHYSINT, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward.
Both X posts are carried in full by Pure Xbox and by Final Weapon, and the text above was checked against both.
Where the two accounts diverge
Sony's word is "step away". Kojima's word for what he was told is "cancel". Those are not synonyms, and both parties chose their wording deliberately in statements published nine minutes apart.
Neither has been contradicted. PlayStation Studios has not said it intended to cancel Physint, and Kojima has not said Sony merely withdrew. Anyone writing that PlayStation cancelled the game is reporting Kojima's characterisation as fact, and anyone writing that Kojima simply changed partners is dropping his account of how the change started. The honest position is that two parties have described the same decision differently.
| When | What | Whose account |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-June 2026 | Kojima Productions receives notice from PlayStation Studios that it would cancel Physint | Hideo Kojima on X |
| The three months since | Kojima Productions searches for a new partner and negotiates across several fields | Hideo Kojima on X |
| 10 September 2026 | Kojima Productions confirms Xbox as its new partner on Physint | Kojima Productions |
| 10 September 2026 | Xbox says it is expanding the partnership to publish Physint | Xbox Wire |
| 10 September 2026 | PlayStation Studios says it has decided to step away from the project | PlayStation on X |
The mid-June date and the three-month search are Kojima's own framing and his own count. No other party has put a date on any part of it.
What nobody announced
None of the four statements mentions a platform, a release date, a release window, Game Pass, exclusivity, or the engine the game runs on. That absence is easy to get wrong, because a publishing change reads like a platform change and is not one.
Physint's platforms are unannounced. Whether it stays on PlayStation hardware, appears on PC, or lands on Game Pass has not been addressed by Kojima Productions, Xbox or Sony. Xbox has previously been explicit that a game arriving under its banner is not automatically a permanent exclusive: chief content officer Matt Booty said in July that single-player games staying exclusive is a rule of thumb rather than a firm commitment. That was a general statement about Xbox's slate, not about Physint.
Sharma posted separately on X that she is "proud to build both with @HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN in Japan", referring to OD and Physint. That is about where the studio sits, not where the game ships.
What we reported in April
Our April report on the Physint casting call described the game as "developed primarily for PlayStation", which was accurate when it was published and is not accurate now. That page has been corrected to point here. The casting details on it, including the Mads Mikkelsen reference in the villain brief and the confirmed leads, are unaffected by the change of partner.
The same page carries a remark about Physint potentially taking five or six years to develop, attributed there to Kojima the year before. No statement made this week repeats it, so it should not be read as a current schedule. In April we also covered Troy Baker's comments on Kojima moving on from Death Stranding to focus on OD and Physint.
What changes from here
For players, the practical answer today is nothing. A game with no announced platforms and no announced date has not become buyable, or unbuyable, on a different machine.
For Kojima Productions, the change is that both of its announced projects now sit with the same partner. OD was already an Xbox project, and Physint joins it. The studio remains independent.
For Sony, a game that Sony Interactive Entertainment and Kojima Productions first announced jointly in 2024, as VGC notes, is now being published by its main console competitor, and its own statement frames the wider relationship with Kojima as intact. The next real information will be a platform list or a release window, and none of the three parties has offered a date for providing either.
