Nexus Mods Splits AI Tag Into Three to Fight Slop
Nexus Mods is replacing its catch-all AI-Generated Content tag with three distinct labels, and modders who mislabel their uploads now risk enforcement action.

A single "AI-Generated Content" tag was never going to cut it. Nexus Mods acknowledged as much this week when it announced a revamped tagging system that splits that one label into three distinct categories, each designed to tell users exactly how much generative AI went into a given mod.
The new tags are AI-Generated Content (for mods with AI-produced code, voices, dialogue, translations, music, or in-game assets), AI Media (for AI-generated promotional material like thumbnails, descriptions, and videos that don't affect the mod itself), and AI Assisted (for mods that are human-led but used AI in a limited capacity, such as texture upscaling or audio cleaning). Community manager Myrddin explained the reasoning in a forum post on July 29th: "One of the main points we've heard from the user base is that our current tag of 'AI-Generated Content' is not sufficient; equating all generative AI use under one tag does not allow for nuance in filtering your mods feed on our platform."
The AI Assisted tag comes with strings attached. Modders claiming it can't be shipping something that's primarily AI-generated; they need to show "significant evidence of development and proven knowledge," including a development history or proof of human-led design. More importantly, Nexus is now enforcing accurate tagging as a terms-of-service requirement. Mods that are miscategorised or deliberately mislabelled are subject to moderation action, and there's a new reporting option for users who spot fakes. The old reporting category for AI content, which as reported by Rock Paper Shotgun led to a frustrating dead end, has been scrapped.
I think this is overdue but smart. Lumping someone who used AI to upscale a few textures in with someone who fed an entire mod through a code generator was always going to breed resentment on both sides. Splitting the tags gives users real filtering power, and tying accuracy to enforcement gives the system teeth it didn't have before. Nexus says it will continue evaluating feedback and adjusting the policy going forward.
