Thirty bucks for an arcade basketball game with no pack-ripping monetisation? In 2026? That alone makes NBA The Run interesting before you even touch a controller.

According to a developer blog on the game's official site, NBA The Run launches June 9 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam at a $29.99 base price. A $39.99 Deluxe Edition adds three unlocked Rookie variants, including Stephen Curry's Golden State Warriors '09, Luka Dončić's Dallas Mavericks '18, and Kevin Durant's Seattle Supersonics '07, plus 1,000 CRED, the game's in-game currency. The developers were explicit about how that currency works: "Shop purchases are simple; you get what you want, no packs to rip here." I appreciate them saying that out loud. Direct-purchase cosmetic shops are how every game should handle monetisation, and the fact that a sports title is leading with that messaging instead of burying loot box odds in a footnote is refreshing.

Before launch, there's a closed beta this Saturday, May 16, running from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM PST. It's a tight three-hour window, but the blog notes that the team already gathered significant feedback from a playtest less than two weeks ago. This session adds a street legend character called Spin Cycle and a new mode, Knockout Solos, where each player controls their full team of three.

The price point is what stands out most here. At $29.99, NBA The Run is positioned well below the $70 standard that most sports games demand, and the no-packs philosophy directly undercuts how EA and 2K have trained players to expect sports game storefronts to work. Whether the gameplay holds up is the part we can't answer yet, but the economics are already doing something different. If you want to find out for yourself before committing, Saturday's beta is your shot.
