25M Players Later, Minecraft Dungeons 2 Arrives Sept 29

Mojang's dungeon-crawling sequel has a firm September 29 release date, a $29.99 price point, and deeper buildcrafting. The original hit 25 million players, so the audience is already there.

Twenty-five million players. That's how many people played the original Minecraft Dungeons as of 2023, a number that quietly made it one of the most successful dungeon crawlers ever released, even if it rarely came up in the same breath as Diablo or Path of Exile. Mojang clearly noticed, because during Sunday's Xbox Games Showcase, the studio confirmed that Minecraft Dungeons 2 will launch on September 29, 2026, priced at $29.99.

The sequel is coming to Xbox Series X|S, PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Windows PC. It'll also be available day one through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Pre-orders are live now and include two bonus hero skins, a Twisted cape, and a Twisted chicken pet.

What's Actually Changed

The original Minecraft Dungeons launched in 2020 and earned solid reviews, though the common criticism was that it leaned too far into simplicity. It was a great entry point for younger players or anyone new to the ARPG genre, but veterans found the loot loop and build variety a bit thin. Mojang addressed some of that over time with endgame content and new biomes, but the core remained streamlined.

Dungeons 2 looks like it's pushing harder on the buildcrafting side. Early glimpses of gear on the official Minecraft site show a more layered loadout system: four armor slots, three artifact slots (each bound to a hotkey), and three talisman slots. One highlighted item, the Tornado Blade, comes with built-in effects and can be further modified at an "Enchantsmith" in town. If Mojang can layer enough meaningful choices into that system, this could address the biggest knock against the first game without losing the accessibility that brought 25 million people through the door.

I'm curious to see how deep the gear system goes. The first game's simplicity wasn't a flaw so much as a ceiling; it was great until you hit it, and then there wasn't much reason to keep going. If the Enchantsmith and talisman slots add real decision-making to builds rather than just more numbers, Dungeons 2 could carve out a proper niche between Diablo's complexity and the original's pick-up-and-play appeal.

Co-op returns for up to four players, supporting both online and couch multiplayer. The official description promises "high-stakes encounters, thrilling challenges, and never-before-seen locations," which is standard marketing language, but the co-op focus is where the first game was at its best. Playing Dungeons solo was fine. Playing it with three friends on a couch was where it clicked.

September Is Getting Ridiculous

The release date slots Minecraft Dungeons 2 into what's one of the most crowded months in recent memory. September 2026 already has a stack of confirmed releases across platforms, and every publisher seems to be racing to get their game out before GTA 6 swallows the industry whole. At $29.99 with Game Pass availability, though, Dungeons 2 is positioned well. It doesn't need to compete for the same $70 budget slot as a blockbuster; it just needs to be the game you and your kids boot up on a weeknight.

Minecraft as a franchise continues to be absurdly resilient. The base game still gets regular updates. A Minecraft Movie cleared $961 million at the box office despite reviews that were, charitably, not great. Minecraft Legends tried the action-strategy angle in 2023. And now Dungeons gets a proper sequel. Mojang isn't treating Minecraft like a single product anymore; it's an ecosystem, and Dungeons 2 is the next branch.

The first game was initially revealed at Minecraft Live back in March 2026, so the turnaround from announcement to release is tight by modern standards. Six months from reveal to launch, with a concrete date and a playable showcase build, is refreshing compared to games that get announced three years before they ship. Mojang clearly had this one further along than the reveal let on.

Minecraft Dungeons 2 launches September 29, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. It's included with Game Pass on day one.
