1440p Docked, 40 FPS: MH Wilds Switch 2 Specs Leaked

Datamined code from a Monster Hunter Wilds update reveals Capcom is targeting 1440p docked resolution and up to 40 FPS on Switch 2. A free Prologue Demo also dropped today across all platforms.

"NSW2 Wilds potentially running at 1080p-1440p docked, 720p-864p handheld and targeting 40-30 FPS." That was the summary posted to the Monster Hunter Leaks subreddit after dataminers pulled Switch 2 performance targets straight out of a recent Monster Hunter Wilds update file. If those numbers hold up, Capcom is swinging hard at what the portable hardware can do.

As reported by WCCFtech, the datamined files point to dynamic resolution scaling between 1080p and 1440p in docked mode, with NVIDIA DLSS likely handling the upscaling from lower internal base resolutions. In handheld mode, the range narrows to 720p-864p, which falls short of the Switch 2 display's native resolution but still looks reasonable for a game this demanding. Frame rate targets sit between 30 and 40 FPS, with Variable Refresh Rate support on the handheld display smoothing things out in portable play. VRR is reportedly not supported in docked mode.

None of this has been confirmed by Capcom. But the specificity of the data, pulled directly from game files rather than speculation, makes it hard to dismiss. And if Capcom actually hits 1440p in docked mode, even only during less demanding sequences, I'd call that a serious flex for a game that struggled to run properly on PS5 and Xbox Series X at launch. This is the same title that shipped in February 2025 with PC performance so rough it earned a "Mostly Negative" Steam review summary. Capcom has since clawed that back to "Mixed" after months of patches, but the damage to early sales momentum was real.

What the Demo Tells Us

Separately, Capcom dropped a free Prologue Demo today across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam. The demo covers the game from the prologue through the beginning of Chapter 1-3 "To the Forest," includes full character creation and all 14 weapon types, and lets you transfer your save data to the full game. Online features are disabled, so it's a solo-only experience, but it's a meaningful chunk of content for anyone who bounced off the game at launch or never tried it.

The demo's arrival alongside new bundle options suggests Capcom is making a concerted push to rebuild the game's audience. A new Gold Edition ($79.99) bundles the full game with a Cosmetic DLC Collection, while the Cosmetic DLC Collection itself runs $59.99 standalone. A smaller Extras Cosmetic DLC Pack is available for $29.99. The previous Deluxe Edition, Premium Deluxe Edition, and Cosmetic DLC Pass bundles are being retired.

Monster Hunter Wilds sold 8 million copies in its first three days and hit a 1.3 million concurrent player peak on Steam. But as DualShockers reported, sales cratered after launch week due to the PC performance crisis, with Capcom's fiscal year 2025 earnings showing barely any movement after that initial surge. Daily Steam player counts now sit around 24,000.

The Switch 2 port, officially confirmed in June after being known to be in development since late last year, could be a genuine second wind for the game. Switch 2 owners will get a version that includes every post-launch monster and the endgame improvements that addressed complaints about low challenge. A major expansion called Ascendance is also due in 2027. If Capcom can deliver on those datamined performance targets, this port won't just be a competent handheld conversion. It'll be the best version of the game at launch, running on hardware a fraction of the size of a PS5.
