Seven years since Metro Exodus and a weekend of leaked gameplay footage later, Microsoft has made it official: Metro 2039 is real, and it's getting a dedicated reveal this week.

According to a post on Xbox Wire, the game will debut as part of an Xbox First Look showcase produced alongside developer 4A Games and publisher Deep Silver. "Xbox has always been a home for the franchise, and we're honored to continue that relationship by bringing you a first look at this next exciting chapter," said Xbox Wire Editor Will Fulton. The showcase is set for Thursday, April 16, at 10am Pacific / 1pm Eastern / 6pm UK.

Leaker NateTheHate, who has a track record of accurate predictions including correct Nintendo Direct dates, shared the Metro 2039 name and April 16 date before Microsoft's confirmation. Whether the showcase will include any first-party Xbox announcements beyond Metro remains unclear.

4A Games has previously acknowledged working on a new Metro title, but the name Metro 2039 is new information. The franchise, based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's post-apocalyptic novels, spans Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light, and Metro Exodus, with VR spinoff Metro Awakening arriving in 2024. Metro Exodus launched in 2019, making this the longest gap between mainline entries in the series by a wide margin. Significant gameplay footage from what appears to be an earlier build of the new game leaked over the weekend, which likely accelerated the official announcement timeline.
