A Turn-Based Game That Can't Hold 60fps? Mechanicus 2
Mechanicus 2 launched with performance issues bad enough that players are being told to cap at 60fps and drop settings to Low. For a turn-based strategy game, that's a tough sell.
You know a game's launch is rough when the optimization guides start appearing within hours of release. Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus 2 hit Steam this week, and players with hardware well above the recommended specs are already wrestling with stutters and frame drops that have no business existing in a turn-based tactics game.
Reports from players paint a consistent picture: even systems running an AMD Ryzen 7 5700X and AMD 9060XT, comfortably above the recommended requirements, are encountering persistent stuttering at launch. The suggested fix? Cap your framerate to 60fps, drop shadow quality to Medium or Low, disable screen space global illumination, disable bloom, and hope for the best. If that still doesn't work, the advice is to put everything on Low and wait for patches. I've seen plenty of demanding games ship with rough performance, but when your game involves selecting units on a grid and watching animations play out, there's really no excuse for this. You're not rendering an open world. You're not tracking 64 players in real-time. You're showing a Skitarii shoot a Necron.
Mechanicus 2 is published by Kasedo Games, and the original Mechanicus earned a loyal following precisely because it was a tight, well-made tactics game that didn't ask much from your hardware. Shipping a sequel that can't maintain a stable framerate on mid-to-high-end PCs suggests either a serious lack of optimization work or an engine that needed more time in the oven. Either way, asking players to disable half the visual features on day one to get a playable experience is not where you want to be, especially at full price. I'm expecting post-launch patches to clean this up, but it shouldn't have shipped like this.
