Scorpion in Invincible VS? Devs Say They Won't Say No
The Invincible VS team at Evo 2026 made it clear they'd love Mortal Kombat guest characters, and given Omni-Man's history in MK1, the door is already half open.

"If there's an opportunity, I'm not going to say no to Scorpion."
That's Lead Combat Designer Bau Bautista speaking at Evo 2026, where the Invincible VS team sat down with multiple outlets and made something very clear: they want guest characters, and Mortal Kombat is at the top of their wish list. Game Director Dave Hall was equally enthusiastic. "NetherRealm, they're the best. That would be incredible," he said, as reported by IGN. "We'd love to have Sub-Zero and Scorpion! Bring them over, that'd be great."
This idle convention floor chatter. There's a real foundation here. Omni-Man was already a guest fighter in Mortal Kombat 1, meaning the relationship between Skybound and NetherRealm already exists on some level. A reverse crossover, bringing MK characters into Invincible VS, would be a natural extension of that partnership rather than a cold call. I think this is one of the more plausible crossover teases we've heard from a fighting game studio in a while, precisely because the groundwork is already laid.
The Violence Has to Fit
Both developers were careful to note that any guest character would need to belong in the Invincible universe's particular brand of brutality. Hall drew a clear line in the sand with a laugh: "I wouldn't want to put Mario or Luigi in there. That'd be cool, don't get me wrong, but I don't want to rip his head off."
Mortal Kombat characters, obviously, don't have that problem. Scorpion and Sub-Zero exist in a franchise where spines get ripped out as a victory pose. Invincible VS, built around the hyper-violent world of Robert Kirkman's Image comic, is one of the few fighting games where MK fighters would feel right at home rather than awkwardly sanitized. Bautista framed it in terms of the source material itself: "One of the things to keep in mind is, Invincible has a ton of guests and crossovers throughout the comics, so it's not outside the realm of possibility."
He's right. The Invincible comics have a history of crossovers with other Image properties and even Marvel characters. Spider-Man has appeared in the Invincible comics, and Hall confirmed in a separate interview with MMORPG.com that they'd love that kind of crossover too. "We're definitely not above that," he said. "We're always down for a crossover."
Guest characters are having a moment across the entire fighting game genre right now. Tekken 8 just revealed Yujiro Hanma from Baki for Season Three. Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is adding Kenshiro this summer. Street Fighter 6 has Tifa Lockhart coming in early 2027. Invincible VS entering that conversation makes sense for a game trying to establish itself alongside those heavyweights, and a Mortal Kombat crossover would generate the kind of attention that money can't buy.
Season 1 Kicks Off Tuesday
While guest characters remain aspirational for now, the immediate future of Invincible VS is already packed. Season 1 launches on June 30, adding The Immortal and Universa to the roster alongside new costumes, an Endless Arcade Mode, and a fresh Ranked Season. And there was one more reveal tucked into the end of the Season 1 launch trailer at Evo: Angstrom Levy, the dimension-hopping villain from the comics and Prime Video series, will be the third DLC fighter. As reported by Shacknews, Levy will get his full debut at Evo France, running October 9-11.
Beyond new characters, the developers shared some interesting details about mechanical evolution for the existing roster. Bautista revealed that Atom Eve was originally supposed to have a revive mechanic before launch, similar to what The Immortal now brings. The team pulled it because they couldn't get it to the quality standard they wanted in time. "Let's focus now on what we can achieve and make sure she's solid as heck, and then come back to this mechanic," Bautista explained. He didn't rule out adding it in a future update once the game's meta stabilizes.
I like what I'm hearing from this team. They're being transparent about cut content, responsive to community feedback (Hall says they're "constantly on top of every board" and reading DMs), and they have a clear three-season roadmap already published. For a smaller studio competing in a genre dominated by Capcom, Bandai Namco, and NetherRealm, that kind of open communication goes a long way.
Whether NetherRealm actually picks up the phone is another matter entirely. But Invincible VS has positioned itself as a game where Scorpion ripping someone's skull out wouldn't even be the most violent thing happening on screen. If any crossover in fighting games makes thematic sense right now, it's this one. Quarter Up and Skybound have made their pitch publicly. The ball is in NetherRealm's court.
