Rockstar Locked GTA 6's Next Reveal Behind Netflix
Rockstar's next GTA 6 reveal will premiere on Netflix on August 27, locked behind a subscription for six hours before it goes live on YouTube. The reaction has been about as warm as you'd expect.

"Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right," Netflix VP of Nonfiction Series Brandon Riegg said in a blog post. "The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto 6 is unprecedented, and we're honored that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first."
Cultural moments, sure. Cultural moments that require a monthly subscription to watch on time? That part's new. Rockstar Games announced today that Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look will premiere on Netflix on August 27 at 3pm ET (8pm BST), with the footage arriving on Rockstar's YouTube channel and the official GTA 6 website six hours later at 9pm ET. Netflix is calling it a "first-of-its-kind partnership," and I suppose putting a trailer behind a paywall is one way to be first at something.
The reaction across Reddit and social media has been predictably hostile. "I know this community can be extreme sometimes, but this has to be the weirdest marketing I've ever seen for a videogame," one Redditor wrote. "A trailer for a trailer? A Netflix exclusive first? WTF is going on." Another put it more bluntly: "They found a way to paywall a f****** trailer." A third fan pointed out the irony of a franchise built on satirising American capitalism now selling exclusive access to its own marketing material: "Kinda feel like the whole idea of GTA games constantly criticizing capitalist America starts to show within Rockstar itself."
I'm not going to pretend six hours is some enormous wait. It's not. But the principle here is what stinks. This is a trailer, not a product. It exists to sell you a game. Making people pay to watch an advertisement on time, even indirectly through a Netflix subscription, is a bizarre inversion of how marketing is supposed to work. Rockstar already caught heat for locking in-game shops and features behind GTA 6's $100 Ultimate Edition, so the Netflix deal isn't exactly calming fears about how aggressively this game will be monetised post-launch.
Three months out, still no gameplay
What makes this sting more is the context around it. GTA 6 launches November 19, and we still haven't seen proper gameplay. As journalist Stephen Totilo pointed out on Bluesky, by this point in the marketing cycle for both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, hands-off press previews had already been published. GTA 5 had hands-off previews in May 2013, four months before its September launch. Red Dead 2 had them in May 2018, five months before its October release. GTA 6 is less than 100 days from shipping and the public has seen two trailers, a batch of screenshots, and pre-order editions. No previews. No hands-on events. Nothing resembling a gameplay demonstration.
There's no word yet on how long the extended look will be or whether it will contain narrated gameplay, a cinematic deep dive, or something else entirely. Netflix's listing describes it only as "an extended look at Grand Theft Auto 6, the next evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series." Fans can set a reminder on the Netflix page now. Everyone else can set an alarm for six hours later.
