GTA 6's Code-in-a-Box Sends Fans Begging Devs for Discs
Rockstar's decision to ditch the disc for GTA 6's physical edition has fans flooding other studios with a question that shouldn't need asking: will your game come on a disc?

Underneath a clip of Wolverine booting someone off a truck, a fan asked Insomniac Games a question that would have sounded absurd two years ago: will the physical edition of Marvel's Wolverine actually include a disc? Insomniac confirmed on social media that yes, it will.co.uk/tag/gta-6/) code-in-a-box announcement has rattled people.
Rockstar confirmed last week that GTA 6's physical edition won't contain a disc. Instead, boxes ship with a download code starting November 12, a week before the game's November 19 launch. The reasoning isn't hard to guess: no disc means no second-hand sales, tighter price control, and zero chance of copies leaking early from retail shelves. Every one of those benefits lands squarely on Rockstar's side of the ledger, not the consumer's.
The ripple effect has been immediate. Fans have already started asking Rebel Wolves whether The Blood of Dawnwalker, due September 3, will ship on disc. No reply so far. I expect every studio with a physical release between now and the end of the year is going to get the same question, and the ones that don't answer quickly are going to get assumed guilty. Codes in boxes aren't new on Switch, where cartridge costs make it a practical decision, but GTA 6 normalising it on PS5 and Xbox is a different proposition entirely for a game priced at $80 standard. If the biggest game of the generation can skip the disc and still sell millions of physical copies, every publisher boardroom is going to notice.
