Three Major Recasts Now Plague God of War's TV Show

Amazon's God of War adaptation hasn't aired a single episode, and it's already replacing three of its most prominent cast members. According to a report from MP1st, casting calls went out in May for teenage versions of Atreus and Thrud ahead of Season 2, meaning both Callum Vinson and Island Austin will hand off their roles to older actors. Combined with the previously reported Kratos recast following Ryan Hurst's severe bicep tear on set, that's three major characters changing faces before the show reaches its audience.

The Atreus and Thrud recasts are at least planned rather than forced. Season 1 adapts the 2018 God of War, where Atreus is a child; Season 2 will cover God of War Ragnarok, where he's a teenager carrying a much larger share of the story. The new casting calls target actors between 14 and 17, a jump from the 9-to-12 range used for Season 1. MP1st notes that the possibility was flagged as early as last year, when Season 1 casting calls listed a character codenamed "Joshua" as an one-year series regular, suggesting a different actor would step in for the Ragnarok arc.

Still, I think the cumulative effect of all three recasts is a real problem for this show's identity. Aging up child actors is a reasonable production decision on its own. But stacking it on top of losing your lead, who now needs to be entirely recast and reshot across four already-filmed episodes, creates a situation where almost none of the central cast carries over between seasons. Polygon raised a fair comparison: HBO's The Last of Us kept Bella Ramsey as Ellie across seasons, letting the audience grow with the character. God of War won't get that continuity with Atreus.

The casting descriptions for Season 2 confirm the show will jump straight into Ragnarok's events rather than stretching the first game across multiple seasons. Teen "Joshua" (Atreus) is described as "eager to learn more about the truth of who he is" and "vulnerable to manipulation," while teen "Ruth" (Thrud) is "confident, intelligent, and sarcastic" with a complicated family dynamic and a belief she'll inherit her grandfather's throne.

Production in Vancouver is paused until October while the search for a new Kratos continues. Between that casting process and the reshoots required for the episodes Hurst already filmed, MP1st suggests the premiere could slip deep into 2028. God of War Laufey, the next game in the franchise, arrives on PS5 on February 16, 2027.
