He Wanted Gears of War. Bautista May Play Kratos Instead

"Marcus Fenix is my dream role," Dave Bautista told fans back in 2018, openly campaigning for a live-action Gears of War adaptation. He turned down a role in the Fast and Furious franchise to pitch himself for it. Eight years later, Netflix is developing a Gears of War film without him, and Bautista is reportedly in negotiations to play Kratos in Amazon's God of War TV series instead.

According to Variety and Deadline, the 57-year-old former WWE star has entered early talks with Amazon to replace Ryan Hurst, who suffered a torn bicep on set that will keep him out until sometime next year. Rather than delay the entire production, Amazon and Sony opted to recast the role and resume shooting in mid-October. If Bautista signs on, he'll need to reshoot the four episodes Hurst had already completed.

The irony of Bautista landing a GoW role, just not the GoW he spent years fighting for, is almost too clean. He wanted to be the gruff, chainsaw-wielding soldier. Instead, he might end up as the gruff, axe-wielding god. I'm not going to pretend the two characters are interchangeable, but there's a reason fans immediately floated his name when the Hurst recasting was announced. Bautista has proven since his Drax days that he can carry dramatic weight alongside the physicality. His turn in Glass Onion and Blade Runner 2049 showed range that a role like Kratos, particularly the quieter, grief-stricken father of the 2018 reboot, would demand.

Age and injury concerns

Sources cited by both outlets flagged two potential issues. First, Bautista has slimmed down considerably in recent years, though the expectation is he could bulk back up in a relatively short window before October production. Second, he's 57. Hurst was 50 when he tore his bicep, and the physical demands of playing Kratos across multiple seasons are no joke. Amazon will reportedly need to put stronger safety precautions in place, which feels like something that should have already been standard.

Beyond the Kratos recasting, the show is also preparing to age up its younger cast. MP1st reported that Callum Vinson, who plays Atreus in season one, will be replaced by an older actor for season two. The same applies to Island Austin as Thrud. This tracks with the source material: there's a three-year gap between 2018's God of War and God of War Ragnarök, which the second season would presumably adapt.

The rest of the cast remains intact. Ed Skrein is playing Baldur, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson is Thor, Mandy Patinkin is Odin, and Alastair Duncan reprises his role as Mimir from the games. The series still has no confirmed release date, and this production hasn't exactly had a smooth ride since it was announced back in 2022. The first official image of Hurst as Kratos drew widespread mockery online, and now the lead has been swapped entirely.

Bautista playing Kratos would be one of those casting decisions that sounds obvious in hindsight but only happened because of an injury nobody wanted. If the deal closes, he'll join a show that desperately needs some momentum, and Sony's PlayStation Productions slate gets its most recognizable face yet. Meanwhile, God of War Laufey, the next game in the franchise, is set to launch in February 2027.
