Game Pass Is Sneaking Into Discord Nitro as a Free Perk
A new Game Pass tier called Starter Edition has leaked via Discord datamining, bundling 50+ games and cloud streaming into the existing $9.99 Nitro subscription.
Forget the usual "here's a free month" promo. According to datamined code from an upcoming Discord update, Microsoft is embedding an entirely new Game Pass tier directly into Discord Nitro. It's called Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition, and if the leak is accurate, every Nitro subscriber will get it at no extra cost.
The details, surfaced by Discord Previews on April 23, paint a slim but functional package: access to 50+ games including Stardew Valley, Fallout 4, and Grounded, plus 10 hours of cloud gaming per month and Xbox Rewards points. It's roughly on par with the current Game Pass Essential tier, minus any mention of online multiplayer. Xbox boss Asha Sharma had teased the collaboration days earlier, telling followers they "might start to see some code in the wild" before an official announcement.
This is a smart play from Microsoft, and I think it's the most interesting thing they've done with Game Pass in a while. Discord Nitro already has a massive paying audience that overlaps heavily with PC gamers. Rather than spending marketing dollars convincing those people to sign up for yet another subscription, Xbox is just showing up where they already are. You don't have to sell someone on Game Pass if it's already sitting in their account. The 10-hour cloud gaming cap and limited library keep it cheap enough to subsidise, while giving millions of Discord users their first taste of the ecosystem. It's a Trojan horse, and a well-designed one. xCloud developer Redphx also spotted evidence that the Starter Edition tier may be available as a standalone subscription outside of Discord, which would suggest a price point well below the current $9.99 Essential tier.
No official pricing or launch date has been confirmed. The leak arrives just days after Microsoft slashed Game Pass Ultimate's price and pulled day-one Call of Duty releases from the service, part of what Sharma's internal memo described as a push toward "durable growth with strong cost discipline." Discord Nitro currently costs $9.99 per month for its full tier.
