Announced in 2020, Fable Won't Ship Until 2027

Playground Games' Fable reboot was first revealed in 2020. After slipping from 2025 to 2026, it's now been bumped again to February 2027.

Six years ago, Xbox dropped a CG trailer for a new Fable during its July 2020 showcase. No gameplay, no release window, just a fairy and a frog and the promise that Playground Games was building something in Albion. By the time anyone actually plays it, it will have been nearly seven years.

Xbox confirmed on social media yesterday that Fable has been delayed to February 2027. The RPG was previously targeting a vague fall 2026 launch, which itself was a slip from an earlier 2025 window. The reasoning this time: Xbox wants to give the game "the dedicated moment it deserves," a diplomatic way of saying its holiday 2026 lineup is already stacked with Gears of War: E-Day, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and Halo: Campaign Evolved.

I get the logic of not burying your own game under three other blockbusters, but at some point the delays stop looking strategic and start looking like a project that can't find solid ground. Fable has now missed three separate launch targets across three calendar years. The official Fable account acknowledged the sting, telling fans "it won't be much longer before you're back in Albion making morally questionable decisions."

Xbox also confirmed that more of the game will be shown at its showcase on June 7. That's the real test. After this many slips, Playground needs to show something substantial enough to justify the wait. A couple of minutes of curated footage won't cut it for a fanbase that's been hearing "soon" since the PS5 was brand new.

As we covered yesterday, the delay also conveniently sidesteps GTA 6's November launch. February 2027 gives Fable clear air, assuming Rockstar doesn't slip too. Fable will be the first mainline entry since 2012's Fable: The Journey, and it's coming to both Xbox and PS5.

Fable's Cutscenes Are Being Built by the Diablo Team

Playground Games is getting cinematic backup from the team behind Diablo and Overwatch's legendary cutscenes. For a studio making its first RPG, that's a smart call.
