Disgaea Ditches Tactics for Hack-and-Slash in July
NIS America has confirmed Disgaea Mayhem for July 23, and it's not a tactics game. The series is going full action RPG, and that's a bigger deal than the date itself.
For over two decades, Disgaea has meant one thing: grid-based tactical RPG combat with absurd numbers and even more absurd characters. That's about to change. NIS America has confirmed that Disgaea Mayhem, first revealed back in February, will launch on July 23 across PC, PlayStation 5, Switch 2, and the original Switch.
The headline isn't the date. It's the genre. Disgaea Mayhem drops the series' trademark tactical grid entirely in favour of direct, hands-on action RPG combat. NIS America describes it as a "brand new take on the Disgaea franchise," and that's putting it mildly. You're no longer directing prinnies from an isometric perch; you're in the thick of it, swinging one of seven different weapon types, each with its own playstyle. If you've played a Warriors-style game, you'll have a rough idea of the feel, though NIS America is leaning into Disgaea's identity with absurd damage scaling. The publisher says you'll be "passing new bills at the Dark Chocolate Assembly to make the numbers go up until you're dealing a million damage with every hit."
I'm curious whether this lands. Disgaea's fanbase is loyal precisely because it scratches a very specific tactical itch that almost nothing else does. Pivoting to hack-and-slash is a risk, and it's the kind of creative swing I'd normally applaud from an indie studio, not a long-running franchise with established expectations. The story certainly isn't going to be the thing that sells skeptics: you play as mercenary N.A., helping Princess Tichelle acquire as much dessert as possible for a big paycheck. NIS America calls it a "light-hearted tale," which tracks for a series that has never taken itself seriously for a single frame.
Disgaea Mayhem arrives July 23 on PC, PS5, Switch 2, and Switch.
