Boltgun 2's New Sister of Battle Steals the Show

Previews for Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 are in, and everyone's talking about the same thing: Nyra Veyrath, the new playable Sister of Battle who plays nothing like returning Ultramarine Malum Caedo.

Forget Malum Caedo for a second. Previews for Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 dropped this week, and every single one lands on the same conclusion: the new playable character, Sister of Battle Nyra Veyrath, is the reason to be excited about this sequel.

Nyra isn't a reskin. According to hands-on previews from multiple outlets, she plays differently from the returning Ultramarine. Where Caedo is a heavy, stomping tank armed with his signature chainsword, Nyra is built around speed and aggression. Her core ability, the Fervent Slide, lets her tear through packs of low-level enemies at full sprint, and leaping at the peak of the slide triggers a slow-motion state that gives you a breath to line up shots. She carries a power sword instead of a chainsword, meaning her melee doesn't snag on enemies; holding down the attack launches a forward thrust that doubles as a mobility tool. Her kit also includes a Melta Bomb that can be detonated early in midair, or even shot out of the sky for an airburst explosion over a cluster of targets. I love that Auroch Digital didn't just give her different stats and call it a day. This is a second character who changes the entire combat loop.

Her weapon loadout leans into the Sisters of Battle fantasy: bolt pistols, flamers, melta weapons, and a Condemnor Stakethrower, a handheld crossbow that winds up briefly before firing a single devastating bolt. The Flamer in particular sounds like a highlight for crowd control, and the slower, harder-hitting bolt pistol offers a different rhythm from Caedo's versatile Boltgun. Once you pick a character, you're locked in for the full campaign, so there's a real incentive to play through twice.

Beyond Nyra, previews point to significant improvements in level design. The original Boltgun had a habit of dropping you into repetitive corridors between firefights; Boltgun 2 reportedly branches out across hive cities and jungle swamps, keeping the pacing tighter. Caedo himself picks up some new tricks too, including an Obliterating Charge that lets you plow through a line of enemies after a brief windup.

A mobile version of the original, titled Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun Boom, was also announced during Warhammer Skulls for iOS and Android later in 2026. No release date has been confirmed for Boltgun 2 itself.
