Black Flag Remake Leaked So Many Times Ubisoft Gave Up
Ubisoft opened its teaser with "gaming's worst kept secret." Two days later, the trailer leaked anyway. At this point, the leaks are the marketing.
On Sunday, the official Assassin's Creed account posted a seven-second teaser that opened with the line "gaming's worst kept secret." It was a knowing wink, Ubisoft finally acknowledging that Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced had leaked through age rating boards, anonymous sources, a statue listing (twice), and its own lead actor Matt Ryan, who reportedly had legal action brought against him by Ubisoft after hinting at the project during a convention. The teaser invited fans to tune in on April 23 for a proper worldwide reveal showcase.
That lasted about 12 hours. An X user going by @intercelluar asked publicly whether any screenshots or trailer footage of Black Flag Resynced existed online. Twelve minutes later, they answered their own question with a screenshot from what appears to be a 1:08 trailer. Then came more screenshots. Then a 10-second clip showing Edward Kenway alongside Blackbeard during naval combat, complete with cannon fire, cutlass combat, and Matt Ryan delivering the line "so let the Black Flag signal nothing but your allegiance to man's natural freedoms." The leaker declined to post the full video, writing "here's a piece, wont post more sorry."
I cannot think of another game that has leaked this consistently at every single stage of its existence. From the initial project rumours back in 2023, to the actor slip, to the rating board filings, to the statue listings, to the official art, to now the reveal trailer itself leaking two days before the showcase. At some point this stops being a security failure and starts being a running bit. Ubisoft opening with "gaming's worst kept secret" was funny. The trailer leaking immediately after was comedy.
What the footage actually shows
The leaked clip is short but revealing. Character models look dramatically improved over the 2013 original, with comparison shots already circulating on X showing a huge jump in detail, polygon count, and animation quality. Multiple sources note the visuals look on par with last year's Assassin's Creed Shadows, which tracks with what you'd expect from a full remake rather than a remaster. The footage appears to be from a cinematic trailer rather than raw gameplay, but the environments, lighting, and character work all suggest this is a ground-up rebuild.
As I noted in our earlier coverage, the game's YouTube listing tags it as a solo experience with no multiplayer. Reports from Insider Gaming now claim Ubisoft will confirm during Thursday's showcase that Black Flag Resynced is a "pure story-driven adventure," with the original's multiplayer cut in favour of new story content and single-player additions. There are also reportedly no DLC plans regardless of sales performance, though a successful launch could greenlight more AC remakes. Modern-day Abstergo sections have reportedly been removed, and naval gameplay will feature ship-to-land transitions.
The multiplayer cut stings a little. Black Flag's competitive multiplayer was underrated, one of those modes that had a small but devoted following. If rumours about Ubisoft replacing the original game with the remake on storefronts prove true, that mode just disappears entirely. I hope someone at Ubisoft has thought about preservation here, even if I doubt they have.
The full reveal showcase is still scheduled for April 23 at 9am PDT / 12pm EST / 5pm BST. Whether the complete trailer survives until then without leaking is, based on this game's track record, uncertain. Ubisoft formally acknowledged the remake's existence only last month when it shared artwork of Kenway alongside the Resynced logo, and earlier this month an alleged release date also leaked, with reports pointing to a July 2026 launch window.
