One Month Later, a Mod Fixes Black Flag Resynced's Fists

Nexus Mods creator kamzik123 has added unarmed combat back into Black Flag Resynced, solving in weeks what Ubisoft inexplicably chose to cut from its remake.

One month. That's how long it took a single modder to restore a feature Ubisoft decided an entire remake didn't need.

Nexus Mods creator kamzik123 has released an "Unarmed Combat" mod for Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced that lets Edward Kenway fight with his fists again, a mechanic that was present in the 2013 original but stripped out of the ground-up rebuild that launched on July 9. As reported by TheGamer, the mod works by having players equip the Officer Small Swords, at which point Edward puts up his dukes and goes to work. There's a catch: finisher animations still default to sword kills, so you won't see the original's satisfying knockout moves just yet. But the core loop of punching your way through guards is back.

This existing at all raises an obvious question. The unarmed combat animations already appear to be in the game's files, used during a scripted tavern brawl sequence and then locked away for everything else. Kamzik123 didn't build a new combat system from scratch; they unlocked something Ubisoft already shipped and chose not to let players access. I find that harder to defend than if the feature had been rebuilt from nothing.

A remake that cuts as much as it adds

Black Flag Resynced has been a strange package since launch. It's a gorgeous remake that earned strong reviews and won Push Square's Game of the Month poll for July 2026 with 54% of the vote, beating out Halo: Campaign Evolved by a wide margin across 983 total votes. The game overhauled combat, stealth, and parkour, and by most accounts the moment-to-moment sailing and exploration feel better than ever. But the rework also removed unarmed combat, Hidden Blade kills, and other fan-favourite mechanics, decisions Ubisoft has vaguely acknowledged but never fully explained.

The studio has hinted that some of these features could return in a future update, but a month after launch there's still no concrete timeline. Meanwhile, the game's Nexus Mods page has grown into a healthy modding community, with kamzik123's upload being the most notable restoration so far.

I don't think anyone expected a 2026 remake to ship with fewer combat options than a game from 2013. When a solo modder can re-enable a feature using assets already buried in the build, the omission stops looking like a design choice and starts looking like a deadline. Ubisoft has the animations. It has the logic. If an official patch doesn't restore unarmed combat soon, the mod scene will have done the studio's job for it, finisher animations and all.
