Performance talk in live-service games can go one of two ways: vague reassurances, or developers actually sitting down and explaining what's happening under the hood. Offworld Industries went with the latter. In a new video posted on April 28th, community partner Slay3K sat down with Squad developers Norby and Assi to dig into the performance and optimisation work going into Update 10.4, including the studio's transition to Unreal Engine 5.7.

The conversation covers where Squad currently sits with performance, what players can expect to notice during gameplay once 10.4 lands, and how Offworld is using UE5-specific tooling to push improvements further. Crucially, they also talk beyond 10.4, giving some visibility into what the roadmap looks like on the optimisation front. For a game that's been running on UE5 long enough that players have strong opinions about its performance, that kind of transparency is exactly what the community needed to hear.

Here's the full breakdown.

This discussion covers where the game and development currently is with regards to performance, as well as what to expect beyond Update 10.4 with future updates. We'll discuss how some of the performance may be noticable during your gameplay and how Offworld is looking to improve it with tools developed in the Unreal Engine." - Slay3K
