Project Zomboid Build 42.17.0 Unstable Released Notes (20th April 2026)

Build 42.17.0 lands on the Unstable branch with occupation rebalancing, animal stress tweaks, and a hefty stack of multiplayer fixes.

Build 42.17.0 is live on Project Zomboid's Unstable branch as of today, and it's a meaty one. The occupation and trait overhaul alone will send character builders back to the drawing board: Doctor and Nurse now cost 0 points instead of -2, Electrician drops from -4 to -2, and the Chef occupation has been corrected to give Short Blade instead of Short Blunt, which was apparently a bug that had been sitting there long enough to become part of the furniture.

The Apocalypse mode balance changes are if you've been struggling with early runs. Wound Infection Damage Factor has been bumped from 0.0 to 1.0, meaning infected wounds now actually threaten you in the default mode. Vehicles also spawn with normal fuel rates rather than low ones, which should smooth out the brutal early-game scavenging loop. Animal stress has been rebalanced across the board too, with livestock now fleeing less frequently and requiring more pressure before they start wrecking your farm.

Multiplayer gets a significant round of fixes, including zombie teleportation on hit, the pipe bomb damage bug, and a server hang on world save creation. Nine new Skill VHS tapes covering Aiming through Welding have also been added. Everything in the update is listed below.

As always it is recommended that you create a new save with no mods after updates. Updates fix bugs and introduce new changes that may not be compatible with any older saves, especially ones older than the last patch.

Right-click PZ in your Steam library.
