Project Zomboid 42.20.2 Stable Hotfix Released Notes (5th August 2026)
A small but necessary hotfix lands today, tackling a technical issue that has been causing display problems in mods and the game's quick tips system.

The 42.20.2 hotfix is a housekeeping update centred on a single recurring technical problem: how the game processes the percent symbol (%) in text files. This is not a flashy change, but it matters for anyone using mods or relying on the quick tips feature to learn the game.
The core issue is that mods have been using a single % character to display percentages, but the game's text processing system treats that symbol as a special operator. The hotfix implements a temporary workaround allowing both % and %% to work, but that grace period has an expiration date. Mod creators are now expected to migrate their mods to use %% syntax going forward, as the single-% compatibility layer will be stripped out in a future unstable update. This is not optional. Error logs will flag which mods need updating, so creators cannot miss the change.
For players, the immediate effect is minimal. The quick tips that appear in-game will no longer display %% where they should show %, and mods using the old syntax will continue to function for now. However, this creates a two-tier landscape: mods updated by active creators will work correctly, whilst abandoned mods or those from inactive authors will eventually break when the workaround expires. Players relying on older quality-of-life or information mods should check whether their mod authors are still active and likely to update.
The patch also adds memory debug information to the FPS counter, a small quality-of-life addition for players who monitor performance or troubleshoot frame rate issues. This is developer-facing mostly, but it means the debug overlay now gives you more data if you need it.
The patch notes emphasise that saves should remain compatible, though the team asks players to report any bugs on fresh saves with no mods installed. This is a standard safety net for a technical fix, but it also signals that the developers are being cautious. They know this touches core text processing and want a clear signal if something breaks. Their confidence in marking this stable rather than keeping it in unstable suggests the fix is solid, but the mod ecosystem transition will take time. Mod creators have been given a clear migration path and error logging to help them adapt, which is the right approach for a breaking change. Players should expect some mods to lag behind or require manual updates over the coming weeks.

▲ Buff▼ Nerf✓ Fix◆ TweakWhile this update should not break saves, if you encounter any bugs please ensure you can replicate them on a fresh save with no mods installed before reporting them to our team here.
TECHNICAL/DEBUG
- Fixed percent symbol handling in files
- Mods should use %% to display % characters
- A temporary workaround was implemented to allow both methods of processing, however mod makers should update their mods to use %% to display % characters going forward as this workaround will be removed in a future unstable update
- Error logs will be populated highlighting the error so mod makers can see what needs to be updated going forward
