Project Zomboid 42.16.2 UNSTABLE Hotfix Released (8th April 2026)
The second hotfix for the 42.16 Unstable branch is here, and if you've been playing Project Zomboid on a controller, this one's for you.
42.16.2 UNSTABLE dropped today on the Project Zomboid Unstable branch, and it's almost entirely dedicated to fixing controller input. Six days after 42.16.1 landed, The Indie Stone has come back with a focused pass on gamepad behaviour that was clearly causing headaches.
The fixes are specific and meaningful. Right-click no longer immediately toggles force aim, which was clashing with the radial context menu. Controller players can now move and access their inventory at the same time, switching vehicle seats no longer boots you out entirely, and squeezing the right trigger for the gas pedal won't accidentally put you into aim mode. That last one in particular sounds like it was actively dangerous in a game where a misfire can get you killed.
Credit where it's due: these are exactly the kinds of granular, reproducible bugs that are easy to dismiss in patch notes but genuinely disruptive to play through. Sorting them out this quickly after 42.16 launched is the right call. Full patch notes below.

GAMEPADS AND CONTROLS
-
Right-click no longer toggles forceAim conflicting with RMC menu. Now waits slightly longer before engaging, so that RMC menu doesn't pop up.
-
Gamepad interactions with UI and Vehicles.
-- Controller users can now move or perform actions while the inventory is open
-- Vehicle radial menu isn't being interrupted by the player aim anymore
-- Switching seats no longer makes the player exit the vehicle
-- Squeezing right-trigger for gas pedal no longer activates aim while driving (requires both right-stick and trigger to aim in vehicles)
-
ToggleToAim no longer breaks for melee/unarmed.
-
Fixed characters getting stuck at rotating character at the start of the tutorial on controller
