The gaming world is abuzz with the latest scoop on Nintendo's much-anticipated successor to the Switch, aptly dubbed the "Switch 2." According to a recent analysis by Hiroshi Hayase, a Japan-based analyst with Omida, the new console is expected to feature an impressive 8-inch LCD screen, setting a new record for Nintendo's display sizes.

Hayase, known for his expertise in small and medium displays, bases his predictions on thorough checks within the supply chain, lending a significant weight to his claims. This insight was further echoed by a Bloomberg report, highlighting the expected doubling of shipments in 'amusement displays' in 2024, largely attributed to the anticipated launch of the Switch 2.

The current Nintendo Switch models vary in screen size, with the standard Switch sporting a 6.2-inch LCD and the Switch OLED model boasting a 7-inch OLED screen. The Switch Lite, on the other hand, has a smaller 5.5-inch screen. The move to an 8-inch display not only signifies a leap in screen real estate but also suggests a commitment to enhancing the gaming experience with larger, more immersive visuals.

Despite the lack of official confirmation from Nintendo, the gaming community is rife with speculation, especially after VGC's report last summer about development kits for the Switch 2 being distributed among key partner studios. This move hints at a late 2024 launch, aligning with Hayase's predictions.

The decision to opt for an LCD screen over the more premium OLED could be a strategic move to manage costs, considering the need for increased storage to support higher fidelity games. This is corroborated by insights from Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, who anticipates a $400 price point for the new console, a $100 increase from the original Switch's launch price.

The Switch 2 is expected to retain its portable functionality, a hallmark of its predecessor, ensuring that gamers can continue to enjoy their favorite titles on the go. This portable aspect, coupled with the larger screen, could set a new standard for handheld gaming devices.
