Starfield Almost Didn't Include Final Quest

Starfield, the highly anticipated game released in September 2023, made a grand entrance into the gaming world, attracting 10 million players in a short span of time. However, as players started running out of activities to engage in, many decided to wait for the game's first expansion, Shattered Space. This led to a significant drop-off in the number of players actively participating in Starfield, despite its promise of next-generation replayability.

At a recent Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Will Shen, the former Lead Quest Designer on Starfield and a Bethesda Game Studios veteran, shed light on the rushed development process of the game. Shen revealed that the final quest in Starfield was almost overlooked due to time constraints and resource saturation within the development team:

"We were finally at a state in the project where we could play through the whole (game). And it became very clear that we were missing the large final location that was going to tie the story together and have a satisfying action-filled payoff. I was both implementing the main quest and leading the quest design team, so I had absolutely no time. The entire quest design team was already overbooked."

Shen highlighted the challenges faced by the team during the development of Starfield, including a massive team of five hundred developers and a rushed final stage of the game that lacked coherence and satisfaction. The hurried nature of the development process resulted in a lackluster closing chapter that failed to meet the team's intended vision.
