Capcom Increases Starting Salary in Japan by Over 25%

Leading game developer Capcom has made the notable announcement that they will be raising the starting salary in Japan by an impressive 25%. This substantial increase reflects the company's commitment to investing in exceptional talent and capitalising on human skill.

Currently, new hires straight out of university start at around ¥235,000 per month, or approximately $1,560. However, starting from the 2025 fiscal year, Capcom will increase this starting salary to ¥300,000 per month, equivalent to around $2,000.

This strategy not only encourages new talent but also rewards existing employees. Capcom is planning to give a 'one-time special payment' to current employees and those that join in the 2024 fiscal year. The company views this as an investment into the people who are integral in shaping the company's future.

In addition to the special payment, average salaries will also see a rise in fiscal year 2024, with an increase of over 5%. This further boost in staff wages comes after a generous increase in employees' average base pay by 30% and the introduction of a performance-based bonus system in April 2022.

Capcom is not the only Japanese game developer investing more in its workforce. Nintendo and Sega have also announced salary raises of 10% and 30% respectively, in reflection of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's call for companies to increase wages amidst rising inflation.

Capcom's financial success seems to continue unhindered, declaring in October 2023 that it's on track to achieve its 11th straight year of growth in operating income. With the successful launch of games like Street Fighter 6 and the Resident Evil 4 remake, in conjunction with strong digital sale of older titles, it is anticipated that Capcom's financial strength will continue into the future with the upcoming releases of Dragon’s Dogma 2, and Monster Hunter Wilds in 2025.
