Alone in the Dark, a survival horror reboot developed by Pieces Interactive and published by THQ Nordic, was highly anticipated by fans of the classic horror series. However, the game fell short of expectations, selling worse than expected according to Embracer Group's financial report for the year ending March 2024.

Despite receiving a positive reception from users, Alone in the Dark failed to impress critics and ultimately underperformed in terms of sales. Critics pointed out design flaws such as repetitive puzzles, poor combat mechanics, and frequent glitches, leading to a Metacritic score ranging between 63 and 66.

While Alone in the Dark struggled to make an impact in the gaming market, other titles under Embracer Group's umbrella fared better. Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection and South Park: Snow Day, despite receiving mixed reviews, managed to meet expectations in terms of sales.

On the other hand, Outcast: A New Beginning, a sequel to the 1999 action game Outcast, faced a similar fate as Alone in the Dark, failing to resonate with players and critics alike. Embracer Group highlighted that the poor performance of these titles had a negative impact on their Q4 results.

Amidst the disappointment surrounding Alone in the Dark and Outcast: A New Beginning, there were success stories within Embracer Group's portfolio. Tomb Raider I-III Remastered exceeded management expectations, proving that there is still a market for remastered classics in the gaming industry.
