Apple Removes Ban on Game Emulator Apps in App Store

Apple has officially lifted its ban on retro game emulators on the iOS App Store. In a recent update, the tech giant announced that game emulators, which were previously prohibited, but as reported by The Verge, they are now permitted globally, along with downloadable games.

Developers must ensure that the software they offer complies with Apple's guidelines and all applicable laws. This move opens up new possibilities for retro console emulators that were previously only available on Android devices.

This decision could be attributed to the European Union's stance on third-party app stores, which may have prompted Apple to make changes to stay competitive in the market. The Verge also noted that this change will pave the way for popular retro gaming apps to make their way to iPhones.

Notably, developers have recently expressed concerns about the future of Apple's game subscription service, Apple Arcade. In a report by Mobilegamer.biz, sources within the industry have raised issues regarding Apple's handling of the subscription service, including canceled projects, reduced developer payouts, and a shift away from original games.
