Xbox Finally Building Its Own Platinum Trophy

Twenty-one years after the Xbox 360 turned achievement hunting into a mainstream obsession, Microsoft is finally addressing the one thing PlayStation's trophy system always did better. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma confirmed on X that her team is building an equivalent to PlayStation's Platinum Trophy, with a release window of later this year.

A fan asked Sharma directly when Xbox would solve its Platinum problem. Her reply was blunt: "Team is working on something for later this year!" No name, no format details, no mockup. Just a confirmation that it's happening.

For anyone who hasn't bounced between both ecosystems, here's why this matters. On PlayStation, earning every trophy in a game awards you a Platinum, a single trophy that sits on your profile as proof you saw everything a game had to offer. Xbox has never had anything like it. You earn achievements, they add to a cumulative Gamerscore, and if you 100% a game it quietly marks as "completed" in your library. There's no fanfare, no distinct reward, no visible badge that separates someone who finished every challenge from someone who just racked up easy points across dozens of games. I've always thought Gamerscore was a weaker system because of this. A number going up doesn't carry the same weight as a discrete trophy you can point to and say "I did that."

Retroactive or bust

The biggest unanswered question is whether this new system will apply to existing games. Xbox has over two decades of titles with achievements baked in. If the Platinum equivalent only works with future releases, it launches with an empty trophy case and years of catching up to do. Push Square raised this point, and I think it's the make-or-break detail. A system that ignores thousands of games players have already completed would feel hollow on day one. If Microsoft can make it retroactive, scanning your existing completion data and awarding the new marker for games you've already 100%'d, that's an exciting proposition. Every game you've ever fully completed would suddenly carry more visible weight.

There's also the Gamerscore question. Achievements typically cap at 1,000 Gamerscore per base game. Does this new completion reward add to that total, or does it exist as a separate tracker entirely? If Microsoft just tacks on an extra 50 points, it misses the point. The appeal of PlayStation's Platinum is that it exists outside the numerical grind. It's a binary: you either have it or you don't.

Sharma's confirmation came alongside a broader wave of Xbox Insider updates that are already rolling out. The latest batch includes the ability to sort achievement progress by name, completion percentage, Gamerscore earned, and number of achievements unlocked. There's also group-chat audio in gameplay captures, cloud save restoration directly on the console, and an expanded wishlist that now supports up to 1,000 entries. None of these are individually transformative, but the pace of updates since Sharma took over as Xbox CEO has been noticeably faster than what came before. She laid out faster platform iteration as a priority in her early internal memos, and she's delivering on that front.

I'm glad this is finally happening, even if it's arriving roughly 18 years after PlayStation introduced Platinums with the PS3. Xbox popularised the entire concept of tracking in-game accomplishments across your profile, and then watched Sony refine the idea with a better reward structure and never responded. That it took this long is baffling. But Sharma has been on a streak of giving Xbox players things they've asked for, from the Game Pass price decrease to renewed promises around exclusivity, and this fits that pattern. The execution will determine whether it actually changes how people engage with achievements or just adds a cosmetic checkbox. If they nail retroactivity and give it a distinct identity separate from Gamerscore, this could be one of the most meaningful additions to Xbox's platform in years. We should know more before the end of 2026.
