One Week Out, Mechanicus 2 Finally Locks In Its Launch

For months, Bulwark Studios wouldn't pin down a date for Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus 2. Then, with exactly one week's notice, they dropped it: May 21, across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The confirmation came via a new leader deep dive video published today, which also detailed two deployable leaders from the game's dual-faction campaigns.

That's a bold way to announce a release date for a game people have been waiting on since the original Mechanicus carved out a cult following back in 2018. No slow drip of marketing beats, no countdown to a countdown. Just "see you next Thursday." I kind of love it. In an era where major releases get announced two years early and then delayed three times, there's something refreshing about a studio keeping quiet until they're actually ready to ship.

The launch lines up with this year's Warhammer Skulls showcase, the annual event that's grown from a week of discounts into a full-blown reveal show. Skulls will also feature updates on Space Marine 2, Darktide, Dawn of War IV, Boltgun 2, Rogue Trader, and Total War: Warhammer 3, among others. The showcase airs May 21 at 9am PT / 12pm ET / 5pm BST, hosted by Alanah Pearce.

Mechanicus 2 itself looks like a proper expansion of the original's formula. Two fully playable factions this time: the Adeptus Mechanicus and the Necrons, each with their own campaign and playstyle. New environmental mechanics let Mechanicus forces use terrain for cover while Necrons can destroy it outright. The game also features a revamped Cognition system, where every unit has its own method of generating the points needed to activate abilities. The Steam page lists a $39.99 price point, with an Omnissiah edition that bundles a digital artbook, original soundtrack, and the legacy soundtrack from the first game.

Ben Counter, the Black Library novelist who wrote the original, returns for the sequel's narrative. Guillaume David is back on the soundtrack as well. Publisher Kasedo Games confirmed the game will also be available on the Epic Games Store at launch.
