Spider-Man 2 Update Sneaks in PS6 Handheld Prep
A new Spider-Man 2 update brings free suits and enhanced PS5 Pro visuals, but the addition of Power Saver mode is the real story: it's prepping the game for Sony's rumoured PS6 handheld.

"It's a Brand New Day for Marvel's Spider-Man 2!" Insomniac Games announced on Bluesky today, rolling out update v1.005.000 with two free suits and upgraded PS5 Pro support. But buried alongside the movie tie-in fanfare is a feature that has nothing to do with looking pretty on current hardware: Power Saver mode, a setting designed to reduce performance and resolution so PS5 games can run on less powerful silicon. Translation: Insomniac is getting Spider-Man 2 ready for the rumoured PS6 handheld.
Power Saver mode is the same toggle that Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered received in a recent patch. The pattern is hard to miss. Sony has been threading this option into first-party titles one by one, and every addition strengthens the case that a portable PS6 is real and coming with backward compatibility baked in. Spider-Man 2 sold 16 million copies as of November 2025; if you're building a handheld library, this is exactly the game you'd want running on it from day one. I think this is the clearest signal yet that Sony's portable strategy isn't a rumour anymore. It's a rollout plan disguised as routine patches.
PSSR2 and Free Suits
On the flashier side, PS5 Pro owners now get access to PSSR2, the enhanced version of Sony's AI upscaling tech. The original PS5 Pro support already pushed Spider-Man 2's fidelity mode into smoother territory, and PSSR2 should sharpen the image further. If you haven't touched the game since launch, this is the best it has ever looked on console.
The two new suits are both Peter Parker exclusives. The Fresh Start suit ties into Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the film hitting cinemas this week. The second is pulled from Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, Sony's fighting game launching August 6. Both are free, no strings attached. For a game that's nearly three years old, dropping free cosmetics alongside a technical upgrade is the kind of post-launch support that earns goodwill rather than spending it.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 originally launched in October 2023 on PS5, with a PC port arriving in January 2025. It hit 5 million copies sold in its first 11 days and has continued to build its install base through PS Plus Extra and Premium, where it's currently available. The PS Store also has it at 58% off until August 13 as part of the Summer promotion.
The update is available to download now on PS5 and PC. But if you're watching Sony's first-party patch notes closely, keep an eye on which game gets Power Saver mode next. That list is starting to look a lot like a launch lineup.
