Two Months Flat? Sonic Movie 4 Already Done Filming
Director Jeff Fowler announced filming on Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has wrapped, sharing a behind-the-scenes look at Metal Sonic. The movie races into theatres March 19, 2027.
Filming began in March. It's now mid-May. Somehow, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is already in the can.
Director Jeff Fowler announced on X yesterday that principal photography on the fourth Sonic movie has wrapped, posting a photo of himself grinning in the director's chair next to a life-sized, deeply intimidating Metal Sonic prop. "On behalf of this amazing cast/crew, we have filmed the BEST Sonic Movie yet and can't wait to share," Fowler wrote. Every director says their latest film is the best one yet, but the speed of this production is striking. Two months of filming for a franchise that keeps getting bigger, more effects-heavy, and more loaded with characters feels almost absurdly fast.
The photo itself is the first proper behind-the-scenes look at Metal Sonic's design for the film. The character was teased in Sonic the Hedgehog 3's mid-credits scene and appeared briefly in the teaser trailer Fowler posted back in March, but this is the clearest view yet. The practical puppet looks ripped straight from the games, all sleek blue armour and red eyes, and I think it's a smart move to build a physical version rather than rely entirely on CG. It gives the actors something to react to and, if the final film uses it well, should help Metal Sonic feel more grounded than a purely digital creation.
The Growing Roster
Metal Sonic isn't the only new addition. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter back in February, Kristen Bell is joining the cast as Amy Rose, another character teased in Sonic 3's post-credits stinger. Bell is a strong pick for the role. She's got the vocal energy for it, and her track record with Frozen and The Good Place suggests she can balance comedy with sincerity, which is exactly what these movies need from their expanding ensemble.
The returning cast is stacked, too. Ben Schwartz is back as Sonic, Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Tails, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and Keanu Reeves as Shadow. Jim Carrey is also returning as Dr. Eggman, despite the character dying at the end of the third film. Sonic 3's post-credits scenes made it clear Shadow survived as well, so expect the full roster to be present.
For anyone keeping track of the game lore, Metal Sonic's origin story fits neatly here. The character first appeared in 1993's Sonic the Hedgehog CD as an Eggman-created machine built to match Sonic's speed, and that game is also where Amy Rose made her debut. Having both characters enter the film series together mirrors their shared history in the games, and it gives Fowler a natural storyline to pull from without needing to invent one from scratch.
What I find most interesting about this production is the pace. Two months of filming for a movie that will almost certainly lean heavily on visual effects isn't unusual by itself; live-action shoots for VFX-heavy films are often shorter than people expect because so much of the work happens in post-production. But it does mean Paramount and the VFX teams now have roughly ten months to finish everything before the March 19, 2027 release date. That's a comfortable window by modern standards, and it suggests the production is running on schedule rather than scrambling.
The Sonic film franchise has been one of the more surprising success stories in the game-to-movie space. The first film recovered from its infamous redesign controversy to become a hit, and each sequel has built on that momentum. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 premiered in 2024 and continued the trend, with Shadow's introduction giving the series its most popular new character yet. I'm curious whether the fourth film can sustain that now that the cast is ballooning. More characters means more screen time to divide, and these movies work best when they keep things moving rather than stopping to give everyone a moment.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is scheduled for March 19, 2027. An official full trailer hasn't been released yet, but given that filming wrapped yesterday, expect Paramount to start the marketing push in earnest over the coming months.
