A Sonic CD Remake? Ex-Sega VP Says It's Real
Former Sega of America VP Mike Fischer casually dropped that a Sonic CD remake is in development. The timing lines up almost too well with Sonic the Hedgehog 4's movie adaptation of the game.
Buried at the tail end of a lengthy retrospective interview, former Sega of America vice president of entertainment marketing Mike Fischer let something slip that Sonic fans weren't expecting. "I've heard that they're remaking Sonic CD, which would be wonderful," Fischer told Sega 16. "That was my favorite Sonic game."
That's a casual way to announce what would be a pretty big deal. Sonic CD, originally released for the Sega CD in 1993, is one of the most distinctive entries in the franchise, known for its time-travel mechanics, its anime-style cutscenes, and a soundtrack that still sparks arguments between fans of the Japanese/European and American versions. The game did get a remaster as part of Sonic Origins, but a full remake would be something else entirely.
The tension here is between the source and the substance. Fischer hasn't worked at Sega in years, and "I've heard" is a long way from an official announcement. Sega has said nothing publicly about a Sonic CD remake. There's no trailer, no store listing, no leak from a database. If you're looking for hard evidence, you won't find it yet. But Fischer isn't some random forum poster; he was VP during the Sega CD era and through the company's transition from hardware to third-party publishing after the Dreamcast. He still has connections. When someone with that resume says they've heard something, it carries more weight than the average rumour.
Why the Timing Fits
What makes this more than idle speculation is the Sonic the Hedgehog 4 movie, which is set to adapt Sonic CD's story. Hollywood tie-in games are nothing new, and Sega has been increasingly aggressive about syncing its game releases with the film franchise. A Sonic CD remake dropping alongside or near the fourth movie would be an obvious play. I'd actually be more surprised if Sega wasn't planning something around Sonic CD given the movie connection.
Sonic's current on the game side is murkier. There are persistent rumours about a Sonic Frontiers definitive edition, and most fans expect the next mainline game to be a Frontiers sequel, but nothing has been confirmed. A Sonic CD remake would slot neatly into the gap as a complementary release rather than a replacement for whatever the next big Sonic game turns out to be. What "remake" means in this context. Sonic Origins already gave Sonic CD a widescreen remaster based on Christian Whitehead's excellent 2011 mobile port. A remake would presumably mean rebuilt visuals, possibly in 3D or in the style of something like Sonic Superstars, and that's where things get interesting. Sonic CD's level design is weird and sprawling in ways that don't always translate well to modern sensibilities. Done right, a remake could finally give the game the mainstream audience it deserved. Done carelessly, it could flatten what makes it special.
Fischer's comment is unverified, and Sega hasn't acknowledged it. But if you're a fan of Sonic CD, the pieces are lining up in a way that's hard to ignore: a movie adaptation on the way, a former exec saying he's heard it's happening, and a franchise that's been on a commercial hot streak since the first Sonic movie in 2020. I wouldn't call it confirmed, but I'd call it plausible enough to pay attention to. Sega's next public Sonic showcase, whenever that happens, just got a lot more interesting to watch for.
