SF6 Year 4 Patch Buffs Ryu, Guts Ed, Enrages Fans
Street Fighter 6's long-awaited Year 4 balance patch has arrived, and the community is not happy. Buffing Ryu while gutting Ed is just the start of the problems.

Capcom's own patch notes describe the changes to Ryu's Solar Plexus Strike as something that would "make the move more balanced." Solar Plexus Strike, for anyone who hasn't been on the receiving end, is already one of the most oppressive tools in Street Fighter 6. Ryu was already sitting comfortably near the top of the tier list with high damage and relentless pressure. So naturally, Capcom buffed him.
That decision sits at the centre of a Year 4 balance patch that dropped today alongside new character Yasmine, and the fighting game community's reaction has been swift and overwhelmingly negative. After waiting an entire year for Capcom's annual major balance update, players expected meaningful changes to the game's most frustrating systems. What they got instead was a patch that leaves the core problems untouched while making some of the most baffling individual character decisions in Street Fighter 6's lifespan.
Drive Rush Goes Untouched
The biggest source of frustration isn't any single character change. It's what Capcom chose not to change. Drive Rush and throw loops have been two of the most divisive mechanics in Street Fighter 6 for over three years now. Drive Rush lets every character close distance with a fast forward charge, and critics have long argued it makes the game feel excessively aggressive compared to previous entries. Throw loops, meanwhile, let certain characters repeatedly throw opponents in the corner, creating sequences that are miserable to defend against and boring to watch. Players have been vocal about both for years. Capcom's response in this patch: nothing.
I get that Capcom takes a conservative approach to balance. They time these patches around the Capcom Pro Tour and only do one major overhaul per year. But when you only get one shot annually to address systemic complaints, and you spend it buffing Ryu and Sagat while leaving Drive Rush completely alone, you're telling your playerbase their feedback doesn't matter. That's a problem for a game entering its fourth year.
The full battle change list reveals a patch where most of the roster received minor tweaks that won't shift much. Honda got small adjustments that might open up new setups off a Heavy Kick counter. Mai's Level 1 Super was reworked so it connects off different combos but no longer works off her previous bread-and-butter routes, and it lost wake-up invulnerability. For the majority of the cast, nothing materially has changed.
Then there's Ed. If Ryu getting buffed is the patch's most confusing decision, Ed getting demolished is its most dramatic. Ed has been a dominant force across multiple patches and character releases, and his Psycho Flicker was central to his pressure game. On block, Flicker used to pull opponents directly into Ed's face, letting him threaten with throws or continue comboing. The Year 4 patch now makes Flicker pull opponents roughly half the distance, giving them time to respond. That single change rips the foundation out from under Ed's entire gameplan. I'm not saying Ed didn't deserve adjustments, but the gap between "nerf" and "bury" is wide, and this looks like the latter.
Meanwhile, M. Bison, one of the most hated characters in online play, received buffs. Sagat got a mix of nerfs and buffs that many players believe will leave him just as strong as before. The pattern here is hard to defend: characters the community was already frustrated by got stronger or stayed the same, while Ed and Mai took the hits.
Alex players, at least, are having a good day. His DDT now beats nearly every projectile in the game, whether normal, EX, or super. You still need to get into Prowler Stance first, but once you do, anyone throwing fireballs from about three-quarters screen or closer is asking to eat a command grab. It's the kind of change that gives a mid-tier character a new dimension, and the clips already circulating are hilarious.
The silver lining is Yasmine herself. The franchise's first Filipino fighter brings aggressive, knife-based rushdown with a boomerang projectile that creates nasty mix-up opportunities. Her Bayani Mode stance powers up her specials and gives her combo routes that look creative. Players seem to be enjoying her, and Street Fighter 6, which has sold over 7 million copies as of June, still has a massive audience ready to lab a new character.
But Yasmine's debut has been overshadowed by frustration with everything around her. Some players are already speculating the patch will push people toward competitors like Avatar Legends and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. I think that's probably overblown in the short term, but it speaks to a real erosion of goodwill. When your community has been asking for the same systemic fixes for three years and your annual balance patch ignores them while buffing Ryu, the message lands whether you intended it or not. The next major update is expected alongside Arjun in Autumn 2026, and Capcom will need to do more than tweak frame data to win back the room.
