25 Years, Zero Consoles. RuneScape Lands on PS5
RuneScape Dragonwilds will launch on PS5 this fall, making it the first game in the franchise's 25-year history to appear on a console.

A quarter century of RuneScape, and not a single console release. That streak ends this fall. Jagex announced during Sony's State of Play showcase that RuneScape: Dragonwilds is coming to PlayStation 5, and it'll be available through PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium on day one.
Dragonwilds is a survival crafting spinoff, not a port of the classic MMO. It launched into Steam Early Access in April 2025 and has sold over one million copies since, sitting at 81% positive user reviews. Up to four players explore the Ashenfall region, grinding skills, slaying dragons, and casting magic in a setup closer to Valheim or Ark than the browser-based MMO most people associate with the name. According to Jagex's most recent roadmap update, the game is targeting a September arrival.
I think this is a smarter play than trying to wrestle the original MMO onto a controller. RuneScape proper was built for mouse clicks and menu tabs; Dragonwilds was designed from scratch as a co-op action game, which makes it a far more natural fit for console audiences. Launching straight into PS Plus Extra also removes the biggest barrier to entry. You're not asking PlayStation players to take a £25 gamble on a franchise they may have only heard about through memes; you're putting it in front of millions of subscribers for free. If Jagex wants to test whether RuneScape can survive outside its PC bubble, this is exactly how you do it.
The one thing nobody has confirmed yet is cross-play. Dragonwilds already has over a million players on Steam, and letting them squad up with PS5 friends would be the single fastest way to grow the console playerbase. Jagex hasn't answered the question either way, and I really hope the silence doesn't mean it's shipping without it. Executive producer Jesse America called the PS5 launch "key to unleashing its magic to more players around the gaming globe" in a press release. Cross-play would be the most obvious way to back that up.
