Forget Side Games, Capcom Bets Big on RE Story DLC

Capcom is reportedly done trying to make side games work. Instead, the studio is investing in lengthy story expansions for Resident Evil Requiem and future titles, filling the gaps between major releases.

"Capcom is investing into doing more lengthy story DLC in the future of RE, of the length & ambition as Separate Ways/Shadow of Rose, for both Requiem & future RE titles."

That's from Dusk Golem, a well-known Resident Evil data miner and leaker, posting on X about what appears to be a significant strategic shift for Capcom's flagship horror franchise. Rather than continuing to develop standalone side games, the studio is reportedly pivoting toward substantial story expansions baked into its mainline releases.

Resident Evil Requiem, which launched on February 27 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 to critical acclaim (sitting at an 89 average on OpenCritic with 96% of critics recommending it), is the first game getting this treatment. Capcom confirmed months ago that a story expansion was in development. What's new here is the scale of ambition behind it, and the suggestion that this approach will become standard across the franchise going forward.

Why Side Games Stopped Working

Dusk Golem offered a clear explanation for the shift. "Capcom's had an issue in recent years in the RE Engine era with side games, like Revelations, the Chronicles, or Survivor games," the insider said. "Apparently this is something of a temporary solution Capcom is employing, investing in longer story DLCs for their RE games which work as smaller, more experimental 'side stories' for the franchise. It also will help fill their schedule of releases in-between the bigger RE games."

I think this makes a lot of sense, and I'm surprised it took this long. The Revelations games were fine, but they never carried the same weight as a mainline entry. Separate Ways for the RE4 remake and Shadows of Rose for Village both proved that players will show up for meaty story DLC if the quality is there. Turning that into a deliberate franchise strategy instead of an afterthought is a smarter use of Capcom's resources than spinning up a full side game that struggles to find an audience.

The Requiem expansion reportedly won't arrive until after Resident Evil Veronica, the Code Veronica remake announced at Summer Game Fest with a 2027 release window. According to Dusk Golem, Veronica is "all hands on deck" at the moment, with Capcom targeting a Q1 2027 launch and willing to slip to Q2 if needed. That likely pushes the Requiem DLC into mid-to-late 2027 at the earliest.

As for what the expansion covers, Requiem's final scene left a dangling thread: unknown soldiers eliminating BSAA forces in the ruins of Raccoon City to retrieve an unspecified "objective." There's speculation it could focus on Grace, the series' newest major character, rather than Leon, whose arc in Requiem felt like it reached a natural conclusion. Dusk Golem also noted the expansion's ambitious scope is a direct result of Capcom responding to post-release feedback.

With Gamescom and Tokyo Game Show both approaching in the coming weeks, we'll likely get official details on Veronica's release date soon, which should give a clearer picture of when Requiem's expansion might follow. If Capcom can deliver DLC at the quality bar set by Separate Ways, this new strategy could quietly become the template for how the franchise operates between its big releases.
