Plague Tale 3 Swaps the Sling for Swords and Daggers
Asobo Studio's next Plague Tale game puts a sword in your hand instead of a sling, marking the series' biggest gameplay shift yet. The studio says release is 'almost here.'

Forget the sling. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is rebuilding its combat from the ground up around swords, daggers, and parries, giving the series its first proper melee system. Asobo Studio laid out the details in a devblog on the Focus Entertainment site, confirming that new protagonist Sophia fights nothing like Amicia did across the first two games. As a pirate smuggler, Sophia was trained to fight from childhood, and the gameplay reflects that shift in identity.
This is a bigger deal than it might sound. A Plague Tale: Innocence and Requiem were built around Amicia's sling as a ranged weapon, with stealth and environmental puzzle-solving doing most of the heavy lifting in combat encounters. Swapping that for close-quarters melee with parry timing changes the feel of every fight. I'm curious whether Asobo can pull this off; the studio has never shipped a melee-focused action game, and the gap between "we added swords" and "the swordplay feels good" is enormous.
The game is set 15 years before the events of Requiem, on a location called Minotaur's Island in the Mediterranean Sea. It shifts between two timelines using a mechanic called "Echoes": 14th-century medieval Greece and ancient Minoan civilization. Sophia, who appeared briefly as a companion in Requiem, is 22 years old here. According to the devblog, she was placed in a convent by her mother's family as a child but escaped to her father, the leader of a pirate camp, where she earned the nickname "The Scorpion of the Seas." The Macula, the rat plague curse central to the series, is directly tied to events on the island, and the blog hints Sophia herself may be affected by it.
Beyond combat, Asobo described puzzles involving a stolen Minoan sphere that manipulates light, plus something "restless lurking in the shadows" that follows Sophia and ratchets up tension. Two more devblogs are planned: an interview with Sophia's actor Anna Demetriou and an entry titled "Into the Myth."
Asobo said the game is in its final production phase, with last recording sessions and the closing notes of the score wrapping up. "The release is almost here," the blog reads. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2026, with a day-one release on Game Pass.
