Another 2026 Game Gone: Ontos Joins the 2027 Pile
Frictional Games' sci-fi mystery Ontos has been delayed from 2026 to 2027, adding to a pattern of slipping release windows that's turning next year's calendar into a traffic jam.

Fable, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, and now Ontos. Frictional Games announced today that its sci-fi mystery thriller is slipping from its 2026 release window into 2027, continuing a pattern that's quietly reshaping next year's release calendar into one of the most stacked lineups in recent memory.
In a post from the official Ontos social media account, the studio laid out its reasoning:
"ONTOS is our most ambitious game to date, both in terms of its size and scale, and in the depth and layers of our story and gameplay. In order to deliver this vision, we have decided to push the release of ONTOS to 2027. We look forward to sharing more updates about ONTOS, our characters, and our world soon."
First revealed at The Game Awards in December 2025, Ontos is set on Samsara, a repurposed moon hotel where players control an engineer named Aditi Amani investigating her father's past. Frictional has described it as a departure from traditional horror, leaning into tactile, systems-driven gameplay with scavenging, machinery manipulation, and large-scale experiments the studio has compared to Shadow of the Colossus. Stellan Skarsgård, known for his role as Lucian in Andor, is attached to the project in a role that hasn't been fully detailed yet. Published by Kepler Interactive, the game is planned for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.
I'm not upset about any individual delay here. Frictional earned enormous goodwill with Soma and the Amnesia series, and if the team says it needs more time, I'd rather they take it than ship something half-baked. What I am noticing is how 2027 keeps absorbing games that were supposed to define 2026. At some point, all these delayed titles are going to collide with each other's launch windows, and the second half of 2026 looking thin while 2027 looks impossibly crowded is a scheduling problem the whole industry is going to feel.
