A Delay in Reverse? Onimusha Ships Three Weeks Early

Capcom has pulled Onimusha: Way of the Sword's release forward by three weeks, shifting from September 25 to September 4. It's a rare move that sidesteps some brutal competition later in the month.

In a year where cancellations and delays have become background noise, Capcom just did something you almost never see: it moved a game's release date forward. Onimusha: Way of the Sword, originally set for September 25, will now launch on September 4 across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

The official Onimusha account confirmed the change on X with a short post:

We are delighted to bring Onimusha: Way of the Sword to you earlier on September 4, 2026.

I love this. Games getting pulled forward instead of pushed back is so rare that it feels like finding a save room in a horror game right before a boss fight. It also reflects the state of development behind the scenes: Capcom clearly feels confident enough in the build to ship it three weeks ahead of schedule, and after the studio's run with Resident Evil Requiem earlier this year, they've earned some trust.

The shift also makes strategic sense. September 25 was a bloodbath: Control Resonant, Silent Hill: Townfall, and several other heavy hitters were all clustered around that date. By jumping to September 4, Capcom avoids that pileup entirely. The trade-off is landing just one day after The Blood of Dawnwalker, the RPG from ex-Witcher 3 developers at Rebel Wolves, but that's a far less crowded window than the one they left behind.

As a result of the date change, Capcom is converting the pre-order bonus into an "early adopter bonus." Players who pick up the game by September 24 at 11:59 p.m. local time on consoles, or 4:59 p.m. PDT on PC storefronts, will receive a Lion Dog charm and Sealed Curse sword appearance cosmetic. Deluxe and premium deluxe editions also include a white monkey charm and white lion sword skin.

A demo is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Playing it and keeping the save data on your drive will unlock a Kubi Akari charm when the full game launches. This is the first mainline Onimusha entry in 20 years, following Dawn of Dreams on PS2 in 2006, so there's a lot riding on this revival. Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches September 4 at $69.99 for the standard edition.
